    2000 SAN Thoughts on Price/Conditions

I put a refundable deposit down on this boat to test drive tomorrow. It looks in decent shape. The carpets and gauges need some work, gel coat is a little oxidized in the green, and the teak needs to be refinished, but overall a great boat I think. The biggest issue is the tach is out so I don't know the hours. Mechanic couldn't pull the hours off the motor due to the common Ford/Tach problem. Former owner was military and didn't use it that often. It has after market sacks plumbed in etc.

Due to the tach issue I offered 17.5k on the boat thinking if the motor goes tomorrow. I can swap in a new motor and resell without too much loss. Dealer ran compression on it and it is within spec (generally 150-160), but had one cylinder a little low on the 135 end.

Thoughts on price and condition. Is this a good buy or am I being hasty?

I think your offer is pretty good. My 2000 sport had a few issues with the keypads having to be replaced. If the ones in the boat are original you may want to plan on replacing them which would be about $350 each. The gauges will also need to be replaced. You will have to judge the boat based on wear and tear and overall appearance rather than engine hours. In my opinion that is the best way to judge a boat regardless. I have seen some low hr boats that were trashed and high hr boats that were perfect.

On a side note, I hate the "refundable deposit" crap. Lol

I agree with Austin179, your offer is pretty good. Now plan on spending some more money to give it a good tune up. Plugs, wires, cap/roter, new Tach, gauges, filters, fluids, and so on. If you can do it yourself you will save $$$. The gel goat just looks like it just needs some love. This forum has many threads that can help you bring it back to life. Just takes time and your shoulders will be sore . The vinyl with a soft bristle brush and LA's Totaly Awesome will clean it up, then add some Babes conditioner and you are good to go. (Some people like other cleaners... this is what I use and that Babes smells like suntan lotion which is why I prefer it.) Good luck and keep us posted.

That interior is not original so dont judge condition based on that. It does look pretty clean from pics. Look over every inch of it. Pull out the rear engine dividers and look over the motor and for any oil in the bilge. 17.5k would be a good deal.

I have the same boat and really love it. I could buy a G today, but see no need because my old 2000 SAN does everything I need it to.

Don't bother changing the gauges. Just replace one with perfect pass (I am assuming that it does not already have perfect pass). If it does, you can check the hours on the PP. If PP was installed after the first hour, you will not have accurate hours of course, but you at least will know the minimum that it was used. Also, remember that a moderately used boat well taken care of will likely cause you less problems than a really low hours boat that was almost never used. The worst thing for a boat mechanically is sitting without ever being used.
