CO poising claims another life - Beware

Very recently, a teenager drowned on Lake Travis, TX while at a church wakeboard camp. CO was just found in her system. She was apparently not wearing a life jacket and may have been teak surfing when the accident occurred. Please people, require everyone who is being towed to wear a life jacket (even surfers), and please do not allow anyone to teak surf behind your boats. It is extremely dangerous, and in the muddy waters here in Texas, once someone goes under, they are impossible to find in time.

Yes, I mean CO (carbon monoxide) poisoning, not CO2.

So sad. One of the many positives of our newer engines with catalytic convertors is that CO emission are exceptionally low making CO poisoning all but impossible. But certainly in older boats the problem still exists.

Sorry not to burst your bubble, we tested our boat a 2013 210 with cats, and there are still high levels of co coming out. I will only surf with FAE or surf pipe.
Think of it like parking your car in the garage, just because you have a cats on your car doesn't mean you wouldn't die if you closed the garage door and started your car.

        Very sad story
        My condolences to the family

Sorry to hear about this. So sad. Every year at least one person drowns on our lake (Clarks Hill Lake) and they usually weren't wearing a life jacket.
Excuse my ignorance, but is teak surfing the same as wake surfing? I don't really understand how a surf pipe really diverts CO emissions. As I understand it the surf pipe just directs the exhaust flow downward, but the emissions can then just float up to where the surfer is

A surf pipe directs the exhaust into the prop wash and it disperses it beyond the boat.

Teak surfing is not the same as wake surfing. Teak surfing is literally having someone hang onto the swim platform and get dragged behind the boat. There is no board involved.

Chexi....where did you hear this? I've been out of town for a few days with no news...but before I left the story I saw on one of the news links from someone that was there was: She had finished wakeboarding, got on the platform and took her jacket off. A big wave hit the boat, she fell and hit her head and off the back of the platform. They didn't find her until a few days later. That is what I READ...so don't quote me on it. Just curious if the story had changed since last Thursday. Ken

Thank you Shockthis for your information. Do you by chance have your CO readings from your 2013? It makes me wonder if our catalytic convertors are really working as expected.

I say this because I thought PCM claimed CARB IV compliance which would be < 0.5% CO by volume in exhaust? Unless you are laying on the swim platform, with the boat not moving, and absolutely no breeze, it would be hard to reach toxic levels unless you spent quite some time in that position. Of course an enclosed space like a garage is certainly a different story. But it sounds like you were getting much higher levels. Engines without convertors can be as high as 15% CO, depending on their ECM tune.

We shut down the engine while changing riders or prepping riders. Unless we're docked or in a swim cove, if you're on the platform, you have a vest on.
