    2006 SV211 Surf Plate

There have been quite a few posts about homemade surf plates/gates so I thought I would share what I put together for my SV211. Made it using scrap aluminum angle and 1/2" HDPE I found at work. Biggest cost was the stainless hardware to attach. I installed a piece of aluminum angle behind the starboard swim platform bracket. The plate then bolts to that aluminum angle. Put foam on the back of the plate to protect the hull. The plate extends about 1-1/2" to the side and 3/4" on the bottom.

For ballast I run stock full, ~350 lbs under passenger seat, ~400lbs on top of hard tank on port side, and 750lbs on floor in front of engine compartment. The photo of the wave shown is before I started using the 750 lbs in front of the engine. The additional weight gives a lot more push.

Cool!! I like the removability. If my SWE doesn't work I may look at something like this. Have you tried other plate sizes? Have it protrude more?

I don't have a lot of pictures of us surfing. Usually it is just myself, the wife, and our two little ones on the boat so no one to take pics. But here are a couple pics of wife and a friend surfing double with the kids. Can ride without the rope just don't have pics at the moment.
I will post a few of the plate off the boat in the morning.

This is actually revision 2 of the plate. I originally had it protrude another 1" to the side. It worked, but I feel like the wave has more push with its current size.

so - are you able to install/remove while you're on the water? or do you have to put it on the lift in order to install it?

and actually - does your boat surf better port or starboard? with an '06, you're sorta a toss up depending on which transmission/prop rotation you ended up with. My 06 will simply not surf port, which is what everybody really wants... so I'm now considering making one of these for my boat...

I can install and remove while on the water. Just need to make sure I don't drop the wing nuts! My boat would surf better starboard and until I made the plate was not able to get the port side wave clean. Very washed out without the plate, so it was built out of necessity since we all surf port side. It was a pretty simple build so I would recommend building one. It will make a huge difference for the port side wave.

                      Hi there,

Can you post some pics of the connection to the starboard swim platform bracket? By installing the aluminum bracket on this bracket does it mean that the rear platform is slightly out of alignment?

Any other pics would be appreciated.

                      Thanks,
                      Dave

I don't have access to any of the aluminum machining that you have, so I'm considering building something similar that 100% clamps to the swim platform bracket and wedges into the front of the platform itself... If I do it correctly, it'll be an NSS style that is able to slide into place with a pin, and then do it's thing. This also means I can build one for both sides and somehow weight the boat evenly (fingers crossed!)

How is the first aluminum bracket attached to the boat? Did you remove the spacer in between the hull and swim platform bracket and slide aluminum angle in place of it?

The aluminum angle that I used had the same thickness as the plastic spacer that is behind the swim platform bracket. So the aluminum just replaced the plastic spacer and everything stays in alignment. I removed the swim platform and bracket then used the bracket as a template to drill the same hole pattern into the aluminum angle during initial installation. I recaulked the through hull bolts during installation. I pretty much made the aluminum bracket using hand tools. Hand drill for the holes and manually tapped the holes for the threads. Used a table saw with carbide blade to cut the aluminum, but that could be done by hand as well, just a little more time consuming. I have debated putting an aluminum bracket on the other side as well so I could move the plate over there when someone wants to surf starboard but so far have not really had the need so I haven't pursued it. I tried evenly weighting the boat but the wave did not stay clean. I think you still need to list it a bit for optimum results. I suspect it is because the 211 hull was never designed around a NSS system. Another picture of the bracket is below along with a picture of the starboard side showing the plastic spacer that was replaced.

I was thinking of doing the same type of mounting for my gate. It is good to see you made it work. Good job. A+
