Looking at upgrading to a 2016 G21 or G23? Fuel consumption

Looking at going with a 2016 G21 or G23. I''m moving up from my 2012 210. is there any difference in a 2015 to 2016 G21 and G23? I've always heard that fuel consumption in the earlier ....say 2013 G23's was pretty bad especially when fully loaded all day. We don't sit or putt around a lot..we are usually riding or surfing. Are the new tranny's and new engines helping with the fuel mileage. Does the 2:1 transmission make a difference in performance as well as fuel consumption? We are looking at a segnificant increase in monthly payment jumping to a G series boat and wanted to take fuel consumption and cost into play as well. I
    Thanks,

    Andrew

    Andrew--

Very smart to factor in how much your ride will cost to operate. I have not seen much info on the 2016s fuel consumption as they are new engines.

I have the 550 and am experiencing 7.9 GPH with four people on board, factory tanks full and surfing at 11.5 MPH. All of this is achieved with the factory prop. I also have an OJ 16x15.5 prop which provides even better fuel consumption but never measured it. As you add more people and ballast your fuel consumption will rise.

Fuel at our marina as of yesterday was $3.00 per gallon so if works out to at least $24 per hour to entertain friends and family. That's way less than going to the movies while you make life time memories. If you go with the 450 you ought to be able to beat my fuel consumption numbers or just budget $24-30/hour and you'll be good.

Where are you in TN? I'd love to see more Nautiques around here.

Joe, thanks for the input. I am in Johnson City up near Bristol, TN. We ride and surf on South Holston Lake. Our lake usual lake (Boone Lake) will not be coming up in water level for the next 7-10 years so thus we have had trailer to other lakes. I've ridin in Chattanooga an Knoxville with friends. Love to take a set on your G one day

I think it is a noble goal to be aware of how much you spend on fuel, but if it is an honest issue, then you should not jeopardize yourself financially by buying a boat that costs 6 figures. The amount spent on fuel is really pennies compared to the price of the boat. To put it another way, if I put 100 hours on the boat this year, and I use up 10 gallons per hour, then I will have spent $3,000 on fuel if gas were $3 per gallon. If you can truly afford 120K on a boat, the 3K is chump change. The boat is awesome for sure, but winter is really long when you are stressing about the payment, or can't take a day off to participate in a kid's activity because you are tied down financially. And that may not be you at all, but there are guys out there that make an impulse buy in the summer, and then he or his family suffers because they are maxed out. Or worse yet, another recession hits, and the boat that you had hoped would retain some value, doesn't. I probably don't have to remind this crew that the government still spends much more than it brings in, which it cannot do forever, and it seems we are unable to control it until it becomes an immediate crisis.

I think I get about 6-7 GPH while surfing, with stock ballast and a crew of 8-10 people. I am choking down about 10-12 while wakeboarding at 23 MPH or while cruising at 30 MPH. This is with the 450 motor. So it gets pretty thirsty while wakeboarding or cruising.

More RPMs = more fuel consumption. Wakeboarding and cruising obviously are going to consume more gas. We surf 99% of the time and cruise at 25 MPH to keep things in check. Fuel consumption is something we just budget for so it's not a stressor and hey sometimes the friends leave a $20 or $100 in the glove box. Those are nice surprises.

Wanted to chime in on the G23 fuel consumption issue...

Bought a new 2015 G23 last spring. I am not writing to complain about the difference between what the dealer told me to expect and the reality of how much fuel this boat consumes, but to see if anyone has found a way to increase the cruising range.

We spend a lot of time at Lake Powell, and, with the factory prop, cruising at about 25-28mph, use a solid 1/4 tank of fuel to get back and forth from the marina to the houseboat. That leaves 1/2 tank to play with before turning around and going back for more gas. Pretty frustrating. I have been hauling 9-6 gallon cans in the boat to provide a few more hours of boating time between fill ups, but I would love to find a solution to this problem. Obviously, a larger fuel tank would be a terrific option, but aside from that....anyone have a solution?

We don't use the ballast tanks for wakeboarding, only surfing. Don't have the boat full of people, usually 8-10 including small kids. No tubing. I calculate, based simply on gallons used/time that we are averaging 13-15gph.

New to this forum...thanks for any advice.

Maybe I'll see ya out on South Holston some this coming year! I am mostly on Claytor Lake in Radford, VA, but I have family in Damascus and Abingdon whom I visit a lot and we usually hit South Holston when I do!

With that said...Jeff has stated that the new '16 motors are way more fuel efficient than the previous motors (all thanks to direct injection). And though I disagree with above that fuel is "chump change" when factoring in the costs of a boat...IT'S absolutely NOT! If you boat as much as I do, and if you/your family is the one spending for gas (meaning other friends aren't always there to chip in), then the cost of fuel could be quite high. I use at least $100 worth of fuel a week, and at 4.3 weeks/month, that's an additional $430/month minimum!! Granted I personally don't see much of this cost since my friends usually pay for the gas, but for a small family who may only take their family out, that could be a lot!

I will say that the difference in the costs of fuel consumed between a '13-15 model compared to the cost of fuel consumed in a '16 model will be miniscule. But the '16 models do burn less fuel compared to previous years...which should answer your question.

Somebody correct me if I'm wrong...but 13-15gph actually sounds really good for that model boat! I don't think you will get much better! Sounds to me that your only solution is to find a way to haul more fuel.

Either that or slow down to conserve some.
