Interesting you didnt like the 2015 VLX. I have a buddy with one where in the short time I was on it, had a hard time getting a good surf wave on it. I like the wave on my 2013 lsv better. Thankfully I am going to water test the g23 at my dealer next week. Will also try out a 25lsv as a comparison. They, too, say extra ballast will not be needed on the g23, but I will bring along some just in case.

Yours definitey is a nice boat, beautiful colours. I'm not sure its fair to call the 550 a gas guzzler though, since people like nyryan are actually seeing improved fuel economy with the right prop on the 550, since the rpms are lower. Also, doesn't the 450 require premium as well, otherwise it starts to pull timing and not produce the 450hp anymore?

PCM's engine horse power ratings for the H5 and H6 in the 2016 models were stated as using regular octane gas (87). They said that using a higher octane will only net better results. I'm not sure if the numbers for the '15 and below models were expressed the same way though.

Between the 2 of us we typically buy a new boat every year and this is our first Nautique.., We initially ordered a new 2015 Malibu 22 VLX and took delivery. It was equipped with the 410 and the 2315 Prop as well. We put about 10 hours on it and was not happy with the way it performed at all compared to the 14 VLX we had. We have Owned 2005, 2007, 2010, 2012, 2013, 2014 Malibu VLX's. Always had to add a bow sac. So we took it back up to Wizard and traded it on this G23. Everyone LOVES the G23.... It would have to be a **** of a deal to go back to Malibu.... This is the first boat that we Surf with just the STOCK ballast and are happy with the wave. There is WAY more power with the 450 and the 2:1 Transmission and we have loaded the boat up pretty well with people. The 550 is a gas guzzler and requires premium fuel plus the extra cost was not justified...

As far as the boat goes it is still for sale if you want any info. The dual axle trailer tows great so no concerns there at all. I have towed a triple as well and didn't notice a difference with my F350 Diesel. The trailer is a Boatmate with that new Powder Coat finish and is an awesome trailer... We have towed it to BC a couple of times now so we tow ours alot as well.. There are a couple of options it does not have including Under Water swim lights and the LED Cupholders. However Nautique Pre Wires for both of those so they are easy to install. We have put about 65 hours on the G23 and it has ran flawlessly. The boat is in absolutely new condition still as were all of our boats when we sold them. You will not regret the Upgrade to the g23 at all... We sure haven't
Do I get commission if it sells here? lol, JK, Gorgeous boat and a great price. Wizard said we could get more than we paid for ours with the dollar falling as much as it has. I'd be all over this one if I was in the market.

Correct. The HP ratings for the '13-'15 model year G's with the ZR450 are based off of premium fuel. Running regular fuel will drop the numbers down into the ZR409 realm.

This might be a dumb question, but if the published numbers are using premium fuel, then that would seem to mean that the numbers for 87 octane are unpublished, and we don't know for sure how much effect there is. Or are those numbers also published somewhere? You mean a 409 with premium is equal to a 450 with regular?

Great question. In reality, there is no octane sensor in the boat. The motor does not know what octane it is burning. All it can do is detect when knock or detonation happens, and then adjust timing accordingly (with a drop in power output as well). This condition will change based on many many variables such as (but not limited to) air pressure, air temperature, and the octane rating. Even the same motor with the same fuel will produce different numbers at changing elevation and temperature, so it would be difficult to answer your question. The way I think about it is that detonation (or knock) is not a good thing for a motor, and it is less likely with a higher octane fuel in a higher performance engine. Higher octane then is a safer fuel to use, with the added benefit of likely having the most output of the motor. Hope that helps a bit!
