Alternative to Winterizing

My boats get used year round. I drain the water if they will be sitting for a few weeks during the cold months, but I often use them a couple of times a week, even in the dead of winter. During those times, I use my Xtreme Heater to keep the engine safe from freezing. This is a great product that has served me well over the past couple of years. If you like to use your boat in the winter, this is certainly a worthwhile investment!

I second 1965's question. I have a 2002 SAN and was thinking my best bet would be to mount the bracket on a divider? any inputs?

Depending on where you are heat lamps also work. I know and have heard of a lot of people with large cruisers who will hook up heat lamps on each side of their Diesel engines. Just turn them on when it is going to get below freezing and off when it isn't.

For my XStar, I just made a small table/stool that I just sat down in the transom behind the motor to set the heater on. But it says they can be mounted in ANY position. I'll prob just mount it to the rear transom wall on the G when it gets here. They also sell a quick release mounting plate on their website.

As a side note...be careful with the heating lamps. I spoke with my insurance, and if a malfunction with the heating lamp were to cause a fire, they would not cover the damge due to improper equipment use. But with this specific heater, being that it is made specifically for marine engines and meets or exceeds coast guard and ABYC standards, IF something were to happen, they would cover it. However the XTreme Heater has built in fail safes to keep from causing fire. Plus, this heater is self regulating. Cuts on and off at certain temps (I believe on at 40 and back off at 50), which means you don't have to watch it all the time, just plug it up and leave it in! Maximum efficiency!

They work great until there is a power outage or somebody mistakenly unplugs it. It only takes 15-30 minutes to drain the water compared to the cost of a new engine . What are you doing to the heater core in the dash?

Agreed...I have one but only use it in addition to draining the water. Although, it's great for use as Jeff stated, when you're not quite ready to winterize the boat and still plan on using it but it may get a little cold over night!

Yes if you drain first the heater will be insurance. You still need to blow or suck out the heater core.

Correct me if I am wrong, but I was told by Nautique that on the closed cooling engines anti-freeze runs through the heater core. If it were fresh water on a closed cooling engine, I wouldn't think the heater would not get very warm.
