Here's the scenario with my boat slip on the lake. My slip is located in a neighborhood dock which is surrounded by some house and technically only accessible with a key, or direct from the water. My boat is way off the beaten path of the main part of the lake. We live about a quarter mile away. I want to leave all my boards, ropes, etc in the boat and just cover it with an over the tower cover. Is anyone using any security systems on their boats? Either the portable ones that set a perimeter or hard wired? Any ideas are welcome. Or should I just insure it, cover it and forget it? There hasn't been any problems per se at our docks in the past.

Insurance might be the way to go. The issue is going to be a deductible if it gets stolen and if its worth a claim. Even with a security system, if its remote (and accessible by water) then any thief has that to their advantage and can take their time without really being caught. Even if you had cameras, its not like your going to catch a license plate like you would have at your home for the police to track.
I would either insure it and risk paying a deductible, or just taking the gear home at the end of the day.
That being said, I have no real personal experience with your situation since my boat is garaged.

An over the tower cover is the best thing you can do. I had my last boat on a lift, in a similar type setup, with an over the tower cover for ten years with only one issue. Someone borrowed one of my brand new boards, but returned it.

Thanks.....I've looked into the Flagship Marine security systems but not sure it's worth it. I thought about the security sign/patch too. It will take a lot of work to uncover, get in the boat and out but it certainly can be done. Security system is about $400 if install myself and even then all it does is alarm, no police calls or anything.

^^^ If you're referring to it being a lot of trouble to remove and install an over the tower cover, it's really not that hard. It's just different. My new boat has a below tower cover and it takes just as long. With the over tower cover, you just start rolling/flopping over from the back, throw it over the tower, keep rolling to the bow, fold the sides of those rolls in, roll a couple feet more, and chuck it to whoever is on the dock. You'll end up forming your own protocol that works best for you. The only time it stunk to put my over the tower cover on was when I was by myself and the wind was blowing real hard.

our dock is in a liitle town right along "river road". It is a busy road but we have had no problems with trespassers or vandals. However a few years ago some kids were stealing beer out of covered boats. I considered setting up a game cam high enough that it is out of reach with a sign warning that the game cam is there. Game cams can be very inexpensive and snap a photo when movement is detected. This may be an option for you and provide some peace of mind.
