Steering wheel discoloration?

Hi there. I noticed my steering wheel has a slight discoloration to it. Almost like a yellowish/brown tint. Not black like it should be. Is this something you guys have ever dealt with and is there a way to fix it?

That's pretty weird. How has it been stored over the years?

Boat is an 02. It was stored inside under a cover without getting much use. Picked it up last fall. trying to determine if there is something I can do to bring the black back or if its just stuck like that.

Do you know what the dressing is that "blues" a gun (makes it black)? I wonder if you cold just apply that and see if it makes a big difference. it is super easy to use. You just wipe it on and off.

I'm sorry.....my 2000 was black also...I was thinking of my 2005 226 that was a silver and black combo. Another thing...I don't think that wheel is from a 2002....It looks like a 2000 or a 2001. 2002 had a nicer, fancier steering wheel. Actually, I found a picture of a used 2001 at Buxton Marine that has the same wheel as your picture...and it is Gold. Looks like some of the wheels might have come like that from the factory. Granted...these pics are of a 210, not a SKI....but I'm thinking the wheels might have been the same for both models. Here's the link to look at the pics. That's a SE ski nautique. Non digital gauges, keyed ignition, non deluxe steering wheel. Actually preferred given problems with all that stuff- well except the yellow steering wheel! You could always paint it. I've seen the discoloring before. Also a new steering wheel probably isn't all that expensive

Yep SE. Nothin fancy on my boat.

So if I take the black cap off, you can see it was black. I do think it was discoloration and the examples Ken posted are probably the same thing. Since it doesnt effect the performance I don't care that much about it. Just wasn't sure if you guys knew of a simple trick to get it to look back to new. I might try polishing it with some compound and see what happens.

I have to disagree. I do not think it is discoloration. I think some came black and some were gold. Maybe someone can chime in that knows for sure.....but that is way too even to be discolored a solid gold like that. Every pic I have found is really smooth and gold like it came that way. Here..I found a 2001 SKI for sale with the gold in the center.

I tried to find a picture in the 2002 brochure that would show the correct color, but all of the steering wheels on the 2002 boats in the brochure are the newer style.

I looked in the 2001 brochure and found the steering wheel shaped like yours, and it is definitely black in the pictures there. Not sure if there were two colors offered or not, but black was certainly available from the factory.

Ken, what I think is happening is over the course of 15 years these wheels are turning yellow. My boat has no gold accessories. It is all silver/grey which is why I dont think its factory. I looked closer at the second link you posted earlier. It looks like this wheel has some faint black especially near the bolts where mine is a consistent yellowing. Hard to tell off a grainy internet photo but I am guessing my 02 has a left over wheel from the 01s and they gave the LE versions the new upgrade.

Note I looked on NP.com and they are asking $300 for a new spoke wheel. So I am going to continue to use my yellow wheel until it falls off.

Yeah.....I saw that faded wheel...BUT....it looks to me like a faded gold wheel more that it does a black that turned to gold. That is a clean 2001 that I posted and I doubt it was left outside or faded. I'd bet money those wheels were gold from the factory for whatever package they were marched to.

The wheel is a teleflex viper, you can find them on eBay for about $100. Not sure if the eBay ones are replicas or originals.
