At idle speed and slower speeds the steering works great after I REPLACED CABLE. But when I am going faster and go to turn right its real stiff, but turns left real easy. I have looked around on hear and all I have come up with is possibly lubing the rudder. Does this sound like what I need to do?? Any help would be appreciated. Thanks

Do you mean stiff as it's pulling to the right? (Just getting the obvious out of the way first) That could be your rudder torque, and is normal. If not, and you replaced your cable, you should replace your rudder packing and grease. I just did this in my boat, and it's a really easy job, that makes a huge difference. Nice pics in the tutorial below. FWIW, I didn't buy that weird tool. I just used a large crescent wrench that worked great. I also used Mobil 1 synthetic grease at the advice of a 20 year promo member. My steering is insanely smooth now.

When I test drove my boat before I purchased it the owner at the time had just replaced the steering cable and I recall upon the test drive that it did exactly what you are describing turns easily to the left and stiff to the right. I figured it was something to do with the rigging and bought the boat anyway thinking I could fix it whatever it was. Unfortunately as soon as I got the boat home I completely stripped it and have been in the midst of a 2 year restoration project. I did just get to replacing the rudder packing today and re-rigging the rudder/steering cable. Hopefully when I get to the point of test running the boat it will be fixed. Hoping someone here provides an answer to your question as I would like to know what the cause is other than the fact that of the prop rotation because while that makes sense I find it hard to believe that amount of stiffness to the left is normal (or right what direction it is, I forget after two years)
