    River mode on 2014 G23

So when trying to dial in surf set up on my G yesterday I ran across the "River Mode".
Does anyone have any experience using this feature and should I be using it if I am on the St Johns River in Jacksonville?

Have you read the manual...it will somewhat describe the function and how it works. I'm not familiar with that area/river but it seems like unless you have a very swift moving current it isn't really recommended to use it because it would seem to make things more complicated instead of easy IMHO.

We use it a lot on the Sacramento river. If you have any meaningful current (e.g. an amount that would require an adjustment of speed), then it's worth using. You set the speed of the current and then tell the system whether you are headed upstream or downstream. It adjusts the speed of the boat through the water by the amount of the current you've input. You can determine the current by reading the GPS speed when the boat is sitting idle for a bit with no input from the motor.

e.g. In normal operation, if you have a 1 mph current and you're heading downstream with the speed control set at 23 mph, the boat will actually be moving only 22 mph through the water. In river mode, if you input a 1 mph offset (current), then the boat will speed up by 1 mph so that it is travelling 23 mph through the water and 24 mph over ground. When you turn around, you tell the system you're headed up stream and the exact opposite happens: the boat slows to 22 mph relative to ground so that it maintains 23 mph through the water.

The main advantage is not having to adjust the speed a lot when you turn around...in this case, the adjustment would be 2 mph. Instead, you just push a button telling the speed control that you've switched directions.

If Nautique offered a paddle wheel option, we wouldn't have to deal with river mode in GPS.

It works partially. The problem is that current is different on different parts of the river. Every turn has it each flow, it changes at bridges, when it gets deeper or wider, etc.
I cannot understand why CC does not offer the paddle wheel functionality.
