Anyone have experience with this motor in this boat? Is it enough or is the 450 needed. Activities will be wakeboarding and surfing with stock ballast and a small to medium sized crew.

It seems to do okay with stock ballast surfing and up to 10 passengers. The problem I've had is with wake boarding. It really fights to get up on plane with full stock ballast. Was there a change in gearing 2015 to 2016? If so, maybe it would be improved. The dealer recommended the 409, I wish I'd gone with my gut and got the 450. We love everything else about the boat.

The '15 409 is a 6L, not a 5.3. The only 5.3 ever available in a G is the H5.
2:1 came out in '14 and was used on the 409 and 450 in '14 and '15. For '16 it is used on ALL G-series boats, including ones with the 550.

Doc,
I know you have high expectations as a consumer. The H6 is the right engine fro you.
It's nice to to see you asking questions again here on the forum. You'll never miss a Malibu or MB if you switch to a G.2015 G23 550
2013 Malibu 22MXZ

N3 has already tested most of this stuff... full factory ballast:
2014 409 vs 450
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TQhoRZSmXAA
2016 H5 vs H6

both reach speed within a boat length or so of each other.

have you ever driven a silverado with a 5.3? they run like a dog... I'm assuming that's why people are worried about the H5. I dont agree with most of what he is saying in the 2016 video, my masters degree in mechanical engineering leads me to think that horse power is more important in a small boat and torque isnt a big of a factor as long as you can spin the prop. for much the same reason, every pump in the world is rated in some type of power (hp/kW).
people try and compare it to a car, but tire friction uses a different energy transfer mechanism than a prop essentially throwing water to create thrust. Now I haven't looked at the constitutive equations - so I cant be sure, but this is just my general 'gut' feeling.

The 5.3 in my G21 is just fine with stock weight and 5-6 people wake boarding. I have 500lbs of lead midship and with 3 people you start to notice the weight. Nothing terrible just notice it. I have 2 750's that I plan to fill or partially fill and I am certain I will need a prop upgrade to do it. I have owned a 09 Silvarado with the 5.3 and it not a comparison to this motor in anyway. All that said for a 23 get the H6
