Went from a 2015 g21 with a 409 to a 2016 g23 with the 5.3 and love it. Only have 10 hrs so far but gas consumption is the same or better and engine performance feels better over all. I can see if you load your boat with 16 peeps and over sack your boat with lead and extra ballast you will need the bigger engine but that's not us. I would buy the 5.3 in my next one. It's got plenty of power.
5.3 just wasn't enough for me. I tested both engines. With just me, the dealer and my girlfriend and the boat fully weighted, it was obvious to me that the H6 was worth every penny for the upgrade. Not to mention, if you ever want to re-sale it, the H6 will greatly help it's value! If you just primarily surf, then the H5 would be fine. But if you wakeboard equally as much (and like to use full ballast when doing so), then go with the H6 for sure!
My 2016 G23 has the H6 and with full ballast and 8 adults its slow to plane. I mostly surf so its not an issue. I only fill the ballast up full for a few of my friends. You could get away with the 5.3L surfing, but no way would I do it if wakeboarding is on the agenda.
The 5.3 in my G21 is just fine with stock weight and 5-6 people wake boarding. I have 500lbs of lead midship and with 3 people you start to notice the weight. Nothing terrible just notice it. I have 2 750's that I plan to fill or partially fill and I am certain I will need a prop upgrade to do it. I have owned a 09 Silvarado with the 5.3 and it not a comparison to this motor in anyway. All that said for a 23 get the H6

What prop comes in the G21 and the G23 and what would you switch to?

That's surprising it's slow to plane with that load. Do you have the NCRS on/auto?

Good luck with your research Doc!
NCRS is on auto, but my PDM was replaced today because of NCRS problems. Maybe it was a bad PDM and not the weight on the boat? Will find out soon enough.
I know there is a big markup for the 550 but what is the price difference between H5 and H6? Easy for me to spend somebody elses money but I gotta imagine it's a tiny percentage when we are talking about boats well north of 100K. You will likely get most if not all of it back and it will be that much more marketable when it comes to resale.

What is the PDM? I have felt that my H6 is pretty much identical to the ZR450 in my 2015 in both HP and fuel consumption. Am I speaking heresy here? I know that getting up on plane with 8 people and full ballast was not happening at one point in my last Lake powell trip (3600 feet elevation). There are times when I am sure that the NCRS does absolutely nothing, then times I think it does something. I drove around some with it both on Auto and then doing it manually and I am pretty sure that my manual NCRS does nothing at all. Before I come on here and go all ape crazy, I planned on playing with it on a flat water day so I can assess the wake as well as the planing capacity.
Sorry about the hijack, but the point being that having an Auto NCRS that works is very helpful when your power is not quite sufficient.
My H6 is great, and my NCRS definitely makes a huge difference. I always recommend to anyone with a G that they leave NCRS on Auto/High all the time. There is never a reason to change that setting. Actually, I wish that the ability to turn it off wasn't even there. I jumped in one of the G boats used at a local camp here at Lake Norman the other day, and the NCRS was off, and nobody could figure out why the boat felt so heavy and took forever to plane. As soon as we set NCRS back on Auto/High, all was well.
As far as the H6/ZR450 comparison, my H6 uses significantly less gas than my 450 from last year. I am seeing about a 20% savings, and I keep track carefully.

There's a 100% valid reason to be able to turn NCRS off.
just cruising across the lake you are 2-300 rpms more and the bow 6"+ higher than if NCRS is at 0.
absokutely would not want NCRS on 5 all the time. And you absokutely don't want it on 5 all the time for surfing. For various loads, we have it between 3-5.
