    New to surfing?

My wife and I have never surfed and don't really have anyone to help teach us.We have a vacation in a few weeks and would like to get up early and try to learn while the lake is calm. Our boat is 220 team I have a FAE on order that should be here soon.Question are can I get away with stock ballast and hydrogate? Our spotter is our 3 1/2 yr daughter so there won't be much extra weight back there.I can order the piggie back 750 from Wakemakers if need be.What is a good beginner board I'm 5ft 8 and wife is 5ft 7.Im not really caught up on colors, more so function. Thanks Aaron

Montana? First for safety get a surf rope/ handle. I don't think your stock ballast will do much for you but will at least give you advantage of learning how to get up on the board. If you and your wife will surf on same side you can weight the surf side accordingly with more ballast. Highly recommend you search for the threads on the ghetto gate and wakes happier and make one for all of about $30. There are a lot of people on here with your boat that can comment on weight set up once you determine if you like surfing but to get the basics of surfing going in your case you have what you need minus rope & board.

You'll definitely want more weight. The good news is the 220 throws killer wave.

Get he piggy back kit , or better yet to gain storage and more weight remove rear tanks and just plug in 1100's back there and be done. You'll want to piggy back the center tank too for the maximum potential.

As far as a board. The Hyperlite Broadcast is about as good as it gets lets you progress a bit as well. And gives you some options with 3 removeable fins. The shape hasn't changed much , so if you find a deal on a 1 or 2 year old board jump on it. And as mentioned. Get a quality surf rope to prevent any disasters while learning. Speed somewhere between 10-11mph. If you don't have a homemade gate weight the surf side only.

There is a member on here that recently made Nautique's Surf Sytem (NSS) for the 220 hull. If you're gonna be surfing full time something to think about

also if you are going we it it is calm make sure you stay far away from skiers and boarders as it not only ruins there fun but they can get seriously hurt. Remember to stay in yhe middle of the lake and not by shore. I think 200-300 ft from shore would be a common courtesy so it doesn't damage the shore line or cause young and old to fall off docks.

To echo Shockthis, the great thing about surfing is you can do it in rough water. Don't ruin any glass!!

06 220 is a great boat for your surf side. Start with weighting surf side rear locker with a 750 piggyback or remove hard tank and add 1100. You'll need the engine divder supports as well. That's about the best starting point then add bow weight with stock center tank and bow piggyback or center locker bag. Speed and hydro gate to fine tune. This will get you as much as you need to start. As you add ballast you may need prop to pull it. I believe the 1234 is the correct prop on 06 as they are opposite rotation from 07 and up.220s are great boats and good surfers. Plenty of threads on other options but long story short it's a boat you list or lean heavy to surf side.

We are at Sea level, the 1234 prop hits the limiter at 3/4 throttle and drives me insane.

That prop should get you to 4900 rpm at WOT.

I would recommend finding an instructor in your area if you can. We hired one for 2 hours a few weeks ago and it was a HUGE help. He got 3 of us up and sans rope in about 90 minutes. He also helped with weighting the boat and some driving tips. That one small cost will be exponentially valuable as we progress and help others learn to get up. If there is one on the lake you are vacationing on, worth a call. Any local board ships or boat dealers might know who to call.

That's the difference! We had a 343 and the prop was a must.

what prop did you go too? I own a 220 and have a ronix wake shaper, we have 750's plumbed on top of stock ballast and a pb in the front as well. since most people like to ride in the back of the boat we usually have to throw a bag in the bow to try to plane a little. Wave is good with any sort of redirect from a surf assist
