looking to buy a 93 Nautique, any tips

so we live at a lake, and our son is slowly showing interest in the water, so it is time to open our eyes towards boats.

it is suggested to me to look at nautiques, so we found one, a 93 that has a factory rebuild engine (2013), and new upholstery (2015) asking $8000 including tailor. has Red gel-coat that is a bid faded, everything ells seems fine.


when a factory rebuild engine is installed (or any rebuild) would the hours count also be 00 with new timing, or would it count on (supose 1400 on the old) and 100 on the new, would the meter show 100, or 1500 ?

the gel-coat I may assume some buffing, or polishing ?


any other tips before we go and step into the adventure (I both a deflection gauge) to verify straightness of the shaft.

how do I know it has composite stringers, can you recognize this by tapping? or are thy smaller than wood ?

as far as I can find, it tells that thy went composite in 93, giving this boat is from 93, would there be overlap between wood and composite ? this is a point of concern so need to know how to recognize composite stringers over wood encapsulated.

That boat will have composite stringers, so no worries there.

As far as engine hours on the gauge, it depends if they replaced the gauge or not. They probably did not.

Red is a color that fades quickly, and I would expect to do some polishing at minimum, wet sanding more likely. It will look great when that's done though, and you can replace the graphics for a fairly small amount of money if they are damaged.

so we got the boat, in very good shape as it seems, except some hair cracks in the gel coat along the sized, just under the water line, I probably sand it and then put 2 coats of new gel-coat on, or some epoxy to fill the cracks and avoid peeling .

trying to get all my papers together for the boat, and Iran into confusion.

non I understand if it would be applicable to our boat

# 1 describes serial # (how to read) however douse not match anything I could make out to apply to our ## PLP-PR-R12RT
# 2 has a PL-RP at 285 HP, however we go LP-PR on the tag of the engine, so I assume that is not the one(page 15)
#3 seems to be the same as #2
#4 at least mentions pro boss, however that where the similarity's end
#5 dont know, could be

all very confusing, and we dont know what to follow, and in fact, not even know what we got

any one that can lead us in the right direction, so we find the right document, our insurances is asking for HP and such, and I can not even answer them

I would contact PCM Engines if you have any doubt, but my guess is you have a carburated Ford 351 with GT40 heads rated at 285HP.

I did contact them and have to say that I'm a bid disappointed in their after care so to speak.

I send them a e-mail asking the same as I ask in the post, and thy send me a manual ("here you go, this would cover your engine).

so i reply back to them asking what engine in the manual, as is shows lots of different once.

So the guy mails me back telling me it is the 310HP one.


so again, what, ?? there is no 310HP in the manual, and I ask if he could point me to the exact page and paragraph + explain how come the highest Ford shows 285 HP, why would it be 310HP

I'm not a 100% tech engine person, however can make common censer of things once directed, maybe there is a explanation for a 285 to become 310HP, why not informing me about it, as that was the question all along.

I both the boat a week ago, and cant insure it, because the insurance is also confused about their lack of detailed direction. to date I dont have a firm answer that direct me to the exact model.

I assume it is a PL&RP 285 that some how becomes a 310HP, however the insurance douse not like assumptions, thy want facts before insuring

93 would be a carb, and that being said, your engine would be 285 hP variant. 310 hP was the rating on the TBI engine, but that didn't come out until 94. The guy at PCM likely just got his numbers jumbled a little. In that 92-95 range the engine models were changing fast, so there's lots of hP numbers that fly around.
