Oh, btw, the best way to go if you had previously planned to keep that boat for a long time, is to get it repaired because they have to put a current owner's lifetime guarantee on all of their work which in your case I'm sure would contain most every piece of the boat...

RE: busted boat
WakeUpDude, Thanks for the advise, however in all my dealings with body shops and warranties, it has usually been a finger pointing match instead of a resolution.
Dave210, I don't think that it will cause anyone to not purchase the boat, we still don't know if they're going to salvage it or not. But thanks for the enlightening perspective, and encouragement! Furthermore, we would not sell the boat without disclosing the accident to potential buyers. It's one of thoes "ethic" things.
To everyone else, thanks for the support. Hopefully we'll have an idea of what we're up against come Wednesday. How about \"Chales\"?

and post up some pics man! Take the time to look at how your boat's built since there's a big hole in it. Check out all the once-hidden components that you've never seen.

RE: busted boat
If you are without a boat for the duration of the repair, the insurance company is responsible for putting you in a rental boat of similar kind untill it is fixed. They could just pay you a reasonable amount for you to procure a temporary replacement.
I was in a recent accident with my truck, and they just cut me a check to rent a "friend's" truck in lieu of finding me a comperable 3/4 diesel crew cab pickup while mine was in the repair shop.
I would still say that you should get a new hull from CC if they don't total it. Ask how much your lifetime warranty on the hull is worth, and if the repair facility has been in business as long as the manufacturer. If the repair facility has not been in business as long, will they be around to warrant the repair if it does fail. Will they be responsible for consiquential damages if the repair fails in the middle of a lake, and cause a total loss of all equipment in the boat, and possible loss of life. I find that when you start throwing around loss of life and possible injury resulting from their desire to save money, that their outlook on the situation changes. Especially when you put it in writing.
Nobody wants to be the person who authorised a $5000 savings where someone lost their life.

I very sorry to hear about the accident and am happy no one was seriously injured. Now on to your damaged boat. FWIW, I purchased a "totaled" '93 SN on purpose and set about repairing it myself. Let me be one to tell you that fiberglass is well suited to being repaired. It is well documented that fiberglass repairs can be done and achieve about 95% of the original strength and integrity. I believe my boat turned out looking great and so far, no problems resulting from the extensive repairs. Of course the skill in matching and blending in the gelcoat is the critical aesthetic issue, so you might want to insist that the entire boat is re-gelcoated.
Good luck and take a look at my boat, if interested....

Dragon, a couple of quick thoughts. Have you or your insurance company gotten in contact with West Coast Correct Craft in Rancho Cordova CA? They are the west coast arm of CC, they have a full shop and could probably reapir your boat better than a regular shop, about 8 years ago my boat was "attacked" by a houseboat, they fixed it up and it looked brand new. Also, it's a bit of a fight but having been through a couple of insurance issues on boats over the years, I know it's slow and sometimes frustrating but it works out in the end. A year ago my sea doo's trailer axle broke and the adjuster actually found more problems with my sea doo then we had orignallly expected. I was surprised they didn't total it out because it was over 10 years old, but they said they'd rather fix it than offer me a settlement.

you can only get the insurance company to pay for renting a car or boat if you pay for it on your policy, so if it is not written into the policy, then your pissing in the wind trying to get the insurance company to pay for it.
I am sure some of it depends on state law.
In Texas you can't get dimenished value even though your car, truck or boat is not worth as much after an accident as it was before, no matter how well the repair is. Gotta thank the law makers for that wonderfull piece of protective legislation.

If it was the other person's fult, it doesn't matter what is on your policy. Their insurance company is who is responsible for settling with you. It's not you or your insurance companys fault that the other driver screwed up.2018 SAN 230

The other person is at fault, but their insurer is Alstate, if you guys know anything about Alstate it's one of the worst insurance companies to try and collect from. As in they have Lawyers on staff just to NOT pay out on claims. Right now we are subligating (sp? It's where you allow your insurance company to handle it and then they collect from the other insurance company.) but our own insurance company has not really been helpful thus far. Thus it goes off of our policy and our policy had no "Lack of use rental" clause in it. Or so we have been told by our insurance company.
The person who could possibly be doing the work on the boat is one of the top guys in Portland, however we want the boat to be fixed in Seattle, where we baught the boat. We shall see how it plays out.
All I can say as advise to fellow boaters is really, read your pollicy to make sure that you wont get screwed should some freak accident like this happen to you.How about \"Chales\"?

I would tend to think that all major general insurance companies have lawyers on stand by. And like you said, your own company hasn't been that helpful.I don\'t care.

Onthewater, that may very well be true. But you have to understand Alstate is NOTORIOUS for stiffing people. My uncle had an accident where someone pulled right out infront of him where he was not at fault. It took 2 years for Alstate to pay him for the car that their client totaled. And that was a $4,000 car. That was after taking them to court, where the judge was pissed about Alstate wasting the courts time. Alstate then had to pay for his car and also got slapped with $38,000 worth of legal fees from my uncles lawyers.
Just to give you one example. How about \"Chales\"?

If you take it to one of ALLSTATE's approved repair shops you will get fixed quickly and they will pay whatever the shop estimates it to be. They will try and low ball you on the price if they total it or you don't want to use one of their approved shops. If they total it and you want to keep it you will have to pay what ever they say the salvage valve is to keep the boat.
