What do you consider a good vs great discount on a new 17'?

There are deals to be had out there. I think 20% off is very achievable based on my own experience with a 2016 and what some friends have gotten
15% is not a good deal at all IMO. Sales guy mode.
As for see dealercost, it is fairly accurate IMO but doesn't really matter much. You are going to be able to get what you can get. I would tell your buddy you can get 25% off MSRP on a Bu so he needs to come up a little.
The other issue might be if you are trading in your boat. Dealers will give much less % off MSRP if they have a trade in that they are not too fond of

I think it matter on which model . If your looking at a 17 model that's not the hottest new thing then a larger discount . Otherwise I agree with DocPhilCurrent Correct Craft Boat

Dealers own the boat between 65-70% msrp. I just paid 71% on a 2016. My brother bought a promo boat for 68%.

Great topic, I'm headed out on the water tomorrow to water test a 2017 G23, and a 2017 MXZ 22 same dealer sells both product lines. I will know more about discounts soon as we make our final decision. As you can see we own a 2015 Malibu VLX 22 and are not happy with it. Have had way too many issues. I don't want to wast time discussing that. I like the sound of list minus 20 however I negotiated a 25% discount on the Malibu. I would like to be closer to that discount when all said and done, I will let you know once we make a final decision and final configuration is completed. BTW we are heavily leaning towards a G23.

Good luck on the 25%. I think nautique dealer cost is 30% plus whatever additional discounts they may get. Malibus mark up is more. If you can get 20% off on nautique you got a great deall

Two 196's and one 200 between my brother and I purchased new, and all at 25% off MSRP. All from different dealerships too. It can be done, just be fair but firm, and ready to walk away a time or two.'08 196LE (previous)

From what I've read on the forums, 15-20% off is a "normal" discount and 25% and higher is more aggressive. I think the best leverage in these situations is to shop two competitive dealers and be open minded, or at least appear to be so, between the two. Our G23 discount ended up being right at 25% off MSRP. The Malibu dealer was about 30% off MSRP, but we wanted the G!

The sale price of the boat shouldn't have anything to do with cash down or your trade. The price of the new boat should be $X, and shouldnt change based on anything else. If a salesman tires to tell you different then he's trying to hide money. Once the sale price is established then there can be other factors that change final sale price. Money down can sometimes effect your interest rate due to banks requiring different amounts based on purchase price and your credit score. When getting your price always ask for the cash price out the door. Then you are able to compare your build between dealerships. After they give you their best price then you can ask what they would give for your trade. That's just my two cents and my opinion.
