Question for painted hull owners

In getting ready to order a G23 by years end and have been building different boats on the Nautique website. In all reality I will own this boat 5 to 10 years and then trade it in on something new.

My question is do the people who have purchased painted hulls regret the decision and do people who have stuck with white hills wish they would have went with a colored?

It does take a little more effort to keep it looking sharp but a simple wipe down is well worth it. I don't think I will ever go back to a white hulled boat, it looks pretty mean coming down the lake on plane.

I have always had colored hulls, and I think they really add to the overall appearance of the boat. They aren't any harder to keep clean as far as I have seen. My '98 has a Neutral hull (Nautique's version of white back then), and it shows more dirt than any of the colored hulls on my more recent boats.

It should be noted that this is not paint. It is gelcoat, just like any other area of the boat.

I have a black hull, looks great but does show ANY scratching that may occur due to trailer bunks and/or I have a chip or two from rocks hitting while in tow. Flip side, I have repaired these spots with matching gel coat that worked great, so you will get practice with gel coat repair!

Maybe one of you can explain something to me.

I sometimes see this issue of trailer bunks scratching the gelcoat on colored hulls, but I can't for the life of me figure out why this bothers anyone, or even how they know. When the boat is on the trailer, those scratches would be covered by the bunks, and when the boat is in the water, they would certainly be below the water line. How do you even know they are there?

It honestly doesn't bother me enough to not have the black hull because the reasons you stated (covered up and below water line). The OCD in me just knows they are there, but you are correct not a deal breaker to not go with it on another boat.

"The OCD in you knows they're there?" LOL. That is so funny! In my case, my lift bunks don't match my trailer bunks exactly so I do see a little scratching. No big deal though because I just get under the trailer and buff the lift scratches out at the end of the year. Very minor stuff.

I've owned red, white and now gray bottom 196's. White hides bunk scratches while loading, the other two show them well. With the V shaped bow, you see the scratches when it's on the trailer, so I'm constantly buffing them out. Perhaps with the deck boat shape of a G, you don't see them while on the trailer?

I think the colored hulls will still be a popular choice 5-10 years from now when you're ready to sell. I have no regrets on purchasing a boat with a black hull.

I've had a white hull on a Moomba LSV, a black hull on a XStar, and now a Masters Blue hull on my g23....the only one I would never do again is the white hull! And I'm super OCD about keeping my boats looking great!

Perhaps it depends on the trailer, bunk configuration and/or the steepness of the ramp. My 206 with a Vapor Blue hull will get visible scratches on the hull if you drive it on, hence why I typically will only float on whenever possible. The section of hull just forward of the front bunks when fully loaded is where the scratches are visible.

I have had the same experience with scratches seen forward of the bunks on my previous 04 SAN 210 and my current G23. Both with white hulls for what it's worth.

I went with a black hull, I just give her a bath every week to keep my OCD down. I surf better when I know she was just cleaned too

My gripe is the top deck with colored gelcoat. My kids lean over to touch the water or grab the rope to help pull it in. I see every scuff, rub and scratch. It drives me nuts.
