    Rub rail end caps

I purchased a 98 super sport back in April. One of the stock plastic rub rail end caps was missing. I purchased a set of stainless steal end caps with the Nautique "N" logo. I went to install them and quickly noticed that the screws don't line up. My question is is this fix as simple as drilling a new pilot hole and installing the screws? Should I put a small dab of 3M 5200 on the ends of screws? Any help would be appreciated, thanks in advance!

How long are the existing screws? If they just screw into the rubber rope piece in the middle just pull out the old ones and screw new holes into the rubber. If they are through the side of the hull you may want to peel back the rubrail, seal the old holes with 5200, drill new pilot holes and screw in the new screws with some 5200.

      Imo 4200 would be sufficient

If drilling new holes you should make sure of two things...
1.) taper the hole to avoid spider cracking.
2.) Also, there should be a relief cut around the perimeter of the boat below the rub rail edge and above the rub rail screw holes. If there isn't you should probably do it do avoid any spider cracking in the future.

Good info, I will check how long the stock screws are and see what they actually screw into.

I agree but I have a tube of 5200 left over from my ballast system install!

Wakejunky, thanks for the good info and concerns.I'm now very confidant in drilling holes in boats. After two tower installs and a full auto ballast system install all my fears are gone..ha ha!

I ran into this same issue on my 99 Super Sport. I believe the original screws screw into the glass. I think I reused the rear hole, sealed the existing front hole and used a shorter screw for the front hole that just went into the rubber so I didn't have to drill a second hole. It seemed very solid and has not budged in the 4 years since I have done it. Nothing wrong with drilling a new hole but I haven't seen anything that has necessitated it yet so I never went back and did it.
