Nautique Newbie. Seeking some basic direction.

Hello - I've been considering making the jump to a Nautique and stumbled upon this site today and killed about the last 3 hours reading through it. Great resource, thank you to the contributors, it's really motivating to see such a great community.

Short story - purchased a Moomba Mobius LSV new in 02 and owned it since. Some of the best days of my life have been on the boat but it's time to upgrade. I have a growing family, really enjoy wake surfing, and recently moved onto a lake with a lift 100' from my back door. I'm excited for someone else to enjoy the Moomba once sold, it's a great boat for the $.

In the last couple weeks I've been to a large boat show and multiple dealers. With some allegiance to Moomba, I looked at a 17 Moomba Mojo. Also looked at a new (16) Tige R21, and am about to look at a new (16) Malibu 22VLX. I'm not sold on any of them for various reasons which is another reason I started looking more seriously at used Nautiques.

My major usage will be summer family days on the water and then surfing sessions with buddies.

Couple initial questions for the forum...
    1. Debating between a G21 and G23. My surf sessions are generally only with 3-4 guys, is that an issue with the bigger G23? Other than the obvious differences, anything else significant I should know or input from the forum? Also there will be several days with ~5 adults and ~5 kids on the boat. Am I pushing it with a G21?
    2. I believe the 2013 and 2014 G models were very similar and then some nice more significant changes in 2015. Does that sound right? Unfortunately my budget won't allow for a 15 so I'm leaning towards a 13.
Thanks again for the input, looking forward to the potential of owning a Nautique.

G23 is awesome for surfing even with three guys. I believe Nautique went to the 2:1 transmission on 2014 so I would encourage you make that a high priority on your search. 2016 was the hull change and new dash.

Lots of former Malibu guys on here and the consensus is way better fit, finish and less trips to the dealer for warranty and service. Reseal value is also a strong point for a Nautique.

I have not ridden in a G21 but I do feel like 10 people is probably fine however the G23 would be my preference if I knew I wold have 10 people on a semi regular basis.

I would have to agree on this, if your gonna have 5 kids and 5 adults on a regular basis go G23 and definitely the 2:1 transmission would be be more cost efficient on fuel.

Thanks guys, really helpful. To clarify, is the 2:1 transmission all about gas savings?

2:1 is about more low end power to handle lots of weight. These boats are heavy especially with extra bags added.

G21 is actually 21.5 feet so you only give up 12" in the middle and 6" in the bow to the G23. G23 is by far the most popular model.
In 2015 nautique went to a electric gear selector vs cable actuated. 2016 added the direct injected H5 and H6 engines and new dial knob to control touch screen also added JL audio sound. There might be something about used 2016 models being able to have more of their warranty transferred than in prior years but I'm not totally sure about that.

I can't speak with much authority on the G21 or G23 as we own a 230SAN on Lake Mendota, but if you are going to be boating on Lake Mendota I would push you to go with the G23 as the extra length will help with the chop that comes up on the lake from wind and other boaters.(If you boat on Mendota I am sure you know what I mean) That is why we went with the 23ft boat. I would also agree with above comments about the fit and finish of the Nautique over Moomba, Malibu or Tige.

Awesome to hear Lake Mendota in the house! We boated there for years until we moved to the PNW in 2012. Lots of great memories on that lake. We were Malibu diehards and owned a 2008 23 LSV on Lake Mendota. I have had some scary times on that lake when the winds pick up in the afternoon. On. A calm day, the 23 LSV is good but no comparison to the G23. I was close to buying a Malibu then thought I should consider Nautique. After watching the 16 min Nautique video on the 2016 G23, I thought I should seriously consider it given the thoughtful use of extra storage space. Then I demoed the boat. Hands down the best. Malibu really missed out on innovation. Nautique is the boat! The surf wave is excellent and the wake board wake is excellent too. And you don't have to add any extra external ballast as the G23 comes plumbed with 2,850 lbs of subfloor ballast. A 23 LSV has only 1,100. I'm getting rid of my 23 LSV and have already purchased a 2016 G23. The G23 will be a dream on Lake Mendota, believe me. My only wish is that I was still in Madison when they completed the dock at Memorial Union. Let us know what you decide. PM me if you want to talk further.

Go with the G23. The 2 feet don't seem like much. But having the cooler in the floor makes a huge difference especially when trying to find space for several adults and kids stuff. Let alone all the different sized boards you Will need for the adults and the kids. If your group is consistently bigger than 5-7 people the Natique is without peer. The storage space is unbelievable. Malibu's make beautiful boats but you will take a ton more water over the bow in any Malibu than you'll ever see in the G 23 even though you will have a ton more built in ballast in the G. Any time you put 1000 lbs of water in the bow you will get some waves over the top. But this is a much bigger problem in any boat that isn't a Nautique. Keep in mind that the Tall gunnels are also great for kids ( easier to do a backflip off the side if you start a little higher up!). Surf wake is awesome out of the box, storage space is literally cavernous and if your wife is like my wife all of that space will be filled with something. I can't imagine boating with less storage now that I'm accustomed to the g23. I was just at the boat show and looked at all of the big brands and totally confirmed my decision to buy the g boat. Second choice was the Supra. The more I looked at it the more it looked like they just try to copy the cool things about Nautique so I decided to just go with the leader. But if your a Moomba guy ( a lot of my best friends are ) then you should consider the Supra. It's a nice boat but not as nice as a G 23. Pull the trigger. You won't regret it.
