Depends on how much you take your boat to unfamiliar lakes. We do all the time and the tracking feature on the GPS is great.

No. You get regular cruise control without the upgrade. The Zero off and GPS comes automatically on all G series boats.

Personally, I don't think it would be worth it. I do think it is way cool when I go to Lake Powell and I get water depth on my screen, but I don't trust it enough to think it is a must have.

I didn't think I would use it when I bought my new 230, but I've used it several times. I especially like the tracking feature. It's like leaving a trail of bread crumbs when you go to places like the delta which is an 1100 mile labyrinth of waterways. I was recently at an unfamiliar lake and thanks to the GPS feature, I was able to find a sheltered cove which was hidden behind a hill. Without the GPS, I wouldn't have known that hidden cove existed.

I do not have this upgrade on my 230. I basically never leave my home lake and use the Navionics app on my phone (think its $10) in any unfamiliar places. Speed control wise I cant tell a "difference" it does a good job keeping speed +/- a few 0.2mph here and there. So I dont miss it prob cause I dont know what I am missing! be aware that you will NOT have a clock on the linc screen without this upgrade though....which i think is the DUMBEST thing to have all the electronics and NO clock unless you have gps....took me forever to figure out that is why i had no clock setting.

So I elected for this option on my 230 even though I don't need the GPS for navigation. I know my lake very well. That said I came from a boat with a paddle-wheel PerfectPass and although it worked, I was ready to move on. GPS speedos are pretty much standard these days on boats.

I personally prefer the GPS speed control over paddle wheel, they just seem to be more consistent. Heck, I even added the GPS Perfect Pass (Star Gazer) to a 1997 I/O that we had quite some time ago. If you don't need the mapping, you may be able to upgrade your speed control to GPS by using an upgrade from Nautic Laugic
                http://www.nauticlaugic.com/

On our 2007 wake boat, we installed this and for us it is well worth it. In our area, the benefit of the GPS would not be beneficial, but as you see it is for some and not for others. I am not sure if Nautic Laugic is compatible with the new Nautiques or not. You could give them a call, they are quite knowledgeable and their kits are pretty much plug and play.

What the Nautic Laugic system is:
                        -There is a GPS Puck
-The GPS Puck inputs signal into a conversion box
-The Conversion box, converts the GPS signal to an output the factory Speed Control with recognize
-There is a wire out of the box that goes back to where the paddlewheel is. At the end are male and female wire plugs. Unplug the paddlewheel connection (male & female) and plug the ends off of the Nautic Logic into the factory plugs.

Now instead of the speed control getting its input from the paddlewheel, it is getting its input from GPS. The paddlewheel assembly stays in place, but is not used.

For more info, check out their site: www.NauticLaugic.com

Full Disclosure: I am in no way affiliated with Nautic Laugic, just a happy client and thought my experience may benefit the OP.

I'm a happy client too. the paddlewheel proved to have sporadic failings for me. Use of Nautic Logic does also allow to maintain lake temp sensor input from the paddlewheel unit. There is no downside to installing other than a few hundred bucks. It takes 10 minutes.
