Loving the wave on my 17 G23 but wondering what others are doing with additional ballast or lead... What is working well? Best practice?

OK, so on a 2017 G23 you most likely will not need to add extra ballast to get a good surf wake. It surfs pretty great with just the stock ballast. THAT SAID, there are owners here who want a huge wake and will slam these boats with a lot of extra ballast. Keep in mind that more is not always better. If you put too much in the back, the NSS plate will be too deep and the wake will suffer.Originally posted by mlsurfco View Post
On to NSS settings: This is something you will want to change from 0. NCRS too. There are several "Surf Setup" threads here for the G23. You should start there. Keep in mind that there are no "best" settings. They will change depending on rider skill, preference, people on the boat, etc.

To add on to what was said above...many pro surfers actually prefer the stock ballast setup for surfing over a heavily weighted G. I know quite a few people that have tried a lot of extra weight and said the wave got HUGE, but lost a little of the push that the stock wave had, and ended up dumping the extra weight. With that said, you may want to add ~250# of lead ballast to the port side locker (midship worked best for me) to counter the prop rotation effect. This more or less just evens out the boat under way. I just got 250# of Leadwake.com (or maybe wakeballast.com) bags (5 x 50# bags). You can do this with the ballast shift option, however, that means you will be running just shy of full ballast or will need 250# of water when just cruising to keep the boat leveled out. You will prob want to play with the NSS/NCRS setting a bit to see what you like there. I personally run 0/5 and it works great for surf style boards, and usually a 2/3 for skim style (even though not much of a difference can be seen). Enjoy the ride!!
