GS 22 questions

Basically have my G23 sold and looking at a GS22. I am going to demo this next tuesday and get all of these questions answered but wanted to see if I could get some input in advance

1)This one is only for people who have surfed both a G23 and a GS22. How does the surf wave compare? I love the G wave but it is pretty steep for some newer riders. I actually wouldn't mind a less steep wave for the newbs but want something I can rip on as well

2)cleanliness of the wakeboard wake at different speeds. I have some kids that are getting into wakeboarding and want a clean wake at sub 20 mph speeds

3)I am reading some things about more spray. What's up with that?

4)what motor options are people generally going with? I see the H5 is about a 3K upgrade for less HP and a minimal increase in torque. What's up with that? Any other benefits to it? Fuel consumption I guess?

5)any options you would or wouldn't get? clamping racks? what about the steering wheel? worth the cost?

1) It has a funky double lip if you load everything up. Best thing to do is only fill front 1/2 to 3/4 full and fill full factory rear with some lead.

2) this one is about the same as the G. You need about 19mph to really clean it up

3) the ride and spray is fine. Only time this might be an issue is while cursing around the lake with full front ballast. NCRS really helps this boat out

5) I'm not sure if it's an option on the GS, but the upgraded sound system with the dual subs in the G's are well worth the money. If you surf at all I would opt for the racks. I haven't heard anything about an upgraded steering wheel?

Side note...if the rumor of the GS24 is true, that's the GS in the lineup that I bet will go head to head with the G23

Have no experience with a G23.

1)how much lead and where?

I put 400 lbs in the very back of the boat in the rear lockers. You don't even notice it's in there due to that stepped locker design.

1) I was fine with the factory wave. Just giving you real world feedback from a demo day I was on. I will say when you dump some front ballast it does go away. I surf with a lot of surf snobs also. We are talking about people who also love to add 2k pounds of weight to a factory G or a M235.

2) To clarify, yes I was talking about loaded down with full ballast. With all of modern technology now days with tabs (NCRS), most boats will clean up at a lower speed with zero ballast.

4) I missed this earlier...plenty of power and no reason to upgrade

5) Still wondering what the steering wheel upgrade is? Someone help me out! Haha

22 would be plenty big for me.

Plus, i'm not sure the performance would be any better. Does the G25 perform better than the G23? It's debatable

As you said, it's debatable. I think most would say the G23 is better out of the box. I would not argue that put since I don't have any experience behind the G23. I would argue the G25 can perform as well as the G23 with HP and ballasting but that's subjective so not all would agree.

Things I like (PROS)

1)Fit and Finish-definitely up to Nautique standards. Everything is super functional and makes sense. Seadek in all the right places. The walkthrough is nice. Bigger screen is really cool. Love the reverse camera. The new touches for 2018 look pretty cool too like phone holders all over and more digital media access.

2)Handling-oh baby this thing is like driving an Audi compared to the G. Handles better than my old 23 LSV. Super fun to drive. I miss driving a ski boat like this. The G handles okay but nothing like this boat.

3)Ski wake-for me, as a recreational skier, it was perfect. I suspect you could make it even better with some tweaking. Caution: serious skiers probably will not be overly happy with it. Definitely not at the same level as DD ski boats that I have ridden behind.

4)wakeboard wake-cleaner at lower speeds than the G. Fully loaded the wakeboard wake was very nice. Not as rampy and aggressive as the G. More meaty with less vert. I actually liked it better at my skill level. The G wake is just super aggressive.



Things I didn't like (CONS)

1)Surf wave-out of the box it just didn't do it for me. The ballast just isn't enough. Push isn't enough. It absolutely needs more weight. I would probably add some bags in the rear and some lead in the bow to even it out. I guess I am spoiled by the G. Ready to rip straight from the factory.


Overall, it is a very nice boat. Solid recreational ski wake, very nice wakeboard wake, and a decent stock surf wave with some potential for improvement. Also, very well designed and fun to drive. Probably not the boat for me but I could see it making many people very happy.

The GS22 is the first boat i've owned, so I can't compare to others, but happy to be in the Nautique family, can't see myself leaving. I've got about 60 hours on it already and 45 of those hours are probably surfing, of which I've just learned how to do this year. A few things:

1) It really depends on your skill level, i've seen guys go behind a 200 before and rip it up and people not be able to stay in the wave on the G.

2) The stock ballast on the GS22 is enough to get you going I found. I did however add 400lb to the rear the lockers and bow and it makes a difference! I'm still experimenting with placement of the fat sacs to get the ultimate wave, but if you're into surfing, i would add the weight. I have experienced some spray if you head into a 10-12 wind and the lake is slightly choppy while surfing.

3) It is a multipurpose boat, it's nice to be able to free ski for a bit, then switch to surfing in just a few minutes. But, If i'm hitting the slalom course, i'm not using this boat, i'll use a ski boat.

4) Definitely go with the upgraded racks (love those), I stuck with the ZR4, goes to work when the boat is loaded, but it's plenty imo. Upgraded steering wheel is worth it as well. I wish I got the surf select switch (but can add that later), other than that I loaded the boat up pretty much. Don't be shy on the stereo upgrade either, very much worth it.

Overall, love the boat, great for the family since we all do a bit of everything. Happy to answer more questions!

Great review. I agree with all that you've said. We haven't tried adding any ballast to the stock, but we do have some locker sacs from previous boat that I will give a try. Which racks did you upgrade too? We have the standard racks and would love to have the PTM edge racks that are available but it pains me to spend that kind of money on the racks.
We also did the stereo upgrade and I think its great. Upgraded steering wheel is very nice as you said. Totally agree with your first point and one that I've said on many posts before.
