    99 vs 01 196, which is a better buy?

So a friend is looking at two different 196s. both are in very good condition with 500 hours. Which do you think is the better buy? Are there issues with the 5.0 being under powered in the 01? How difficult would it be to add zero off to the 01?

    99
    5.8 motor
    perfect pass
    $14,500

    01
    5.0 motor
    no perfect pass
    $16,500

I wouldn't say the 5.0 is under powered, just not an engine commonly purchased, which doesn't help resale. Either boat would need a re-power to convert to ZO. If that's your plan, I'd probably negotiate on both and see which comes in the lowest, if they're both in equal condition.

The gauges in 01 are a known issue, when replaced the new hour meter starts from zero unless someone takes the time to manually log the previous hours on the new gauge. You can see what the hours are showing on the PP for a cross check assuming it was a factory/new install.

Unfortunately the 01 does not have perfect ***. My buddy knows the owner so I don't think the hours have been messed with.

Doesn't the 5.0 log hours in the ECM? The Ford won't of course.

Wait, was there even a 5.0 available in '01? I thought the 5.8 GT40 was the base engine that year? Is it maybe the Apex 350 engine? That ECM logs hours I believe?

I would avoid the 5.0 as it is an oddball engine, unless of course you're going to repower. You could add perfect pass to the '01 but its going to cost a grand.

The GT40 was the standard engine in 01, the Apex and Python were options. The Apex is a 5.7l GM engine. I think there's some information that's not correct here.
I'd do the 99 just because of the gauges, perfect pass is a fairly inexpensive upgrade and even with the 99 you can upgrade to Stargazer easily.
