I'm looking at buying a used 210. The dealer just got the boat and claims that it never has been in salt water. I saw it before it was detailed and all the running gear have a green tinge to them and the hull has some dark raised spots on it. I've had my current boat on my lift in fresh water for 6 years and never has seen green tinge on the running gear or the bumpy stuff on the hull. The engine is a zr6 if that makes any difference. Thanks.

RE: Tell tale signs of salt water use?
They may have just had it in a marina with no lift. Just check everywhere you can for rust. Otherwise you either have to go with your gut or trust the dude. Sorry, I'm sure that wasn't much help

RE: Tell tale signs of salt water use?
I know this sounds wierd, but I would open the inspection plate for the prop shaft, run my finger around the seal and touch it to my tongue. Is it salty? if so the boat has been run in salt at one time or another.Nautiqueless in San Diego

RE: Tell tale signs of salt water use?
After I cleaned my hull with ON/OFF, the running gear turned green and ugly and my boat has never been in salt. How old is the boat? I would think rust is the biggest indication of salt water use. Since the ZR6 motor has closed cooling, it wouldnt show up as easily. I would inspect the trailer closely, though.1990 Ski Nautique

RE: Tell tale signs of salt water use?
If/since the ZR6 has closed cooling system, then what does it matter if the boat has been used in salt water absent of any hardware rust. The main issue with salt water is internal engine corrossion...but with closed system, this is a moot point.

RE: Re: RE: Tell tale signs of salt water use?
If it has a ZR6 then it's a pretty new boat. Even if it was sitting in salt water for a few seasons, it might still be ok. But how does the dealer know that it was never in salt? Do you know where the previous owner comes from? Is there fresh water around there? Is it coming with a trailer and if so is it rusted or galvinized? Some good questions to ask...

So, why do you have a galvinized trailer?

RE: Re: RE: Tell tale signs of salt water use?
Understanble. My original '82 trailer rusted a little but had more axel problems than anything else. So in 89 we replaced it. THe boat however, is still going, and going and going....
That said, todays trailers are certainly painted better than those old ones and might last considerably longer. I'll let you know....
BTW, i actually do want to put my boat in salt water, but don't want to risk the $4500 trailer! So could I borrow yours for a day?

Sure, come on down and pick it up, but at fuel prices these days, it might be cheaper to just buy one locally or have your trailer dipped. In truth, it would be cheaper to have yours dipped than the cost of fuel from NY to TX and back.
