I live a sheltered lake life rarely around anyone surfing and neither do we. That said, the kids want to start, but I don't want to be "that guy". I can make it work in the river by staying close to surf side riverbank. There are no docks or home fronts; none as in zero. High banks for the most part. There may be an occasional fisher that I would cease surfing before passing on the surf side. Its a formerly dredged river (closed to barge traffic for several years but still deep) so plenty of depth close to the shore, averaging 20'. It is narrow, averaging 400' shore to shore.

The question is, how disruptive is the non surf side? Assume I stay close to the surf side shore. How much effect will the non surf side wake have on river traffic?

Back in the late 80s inboards were the rage everybody was making them remember the Skiray and the Ski Challenger. As the market got flooded the inboard fad changed and the only a few inboard builders survived.
Mark my words the days of the giant surf boats are numbered its true they are the flavor of the day now but as the surfing craze slows it will be like knee-boarding today. Surfing is something we do once in a while for an hour or so . It gets boring and sucks up a lot of fuel. Ten years from now I doubt you will be seeing 25 plus foot wake boats at the dealers.

**** happens move on... Its not all your fault the skipper of the boat is responsible for there crew on the water and needs to pay attention to whats happening around him.

Three seasons ago i had a fishing boat hit my rollers at a crazy speed got airbone nearly ended in tears, the boat ownwer and i know look back and laugh but not every one moves on so quickly...

Like several of y'all, we occasionally surf when the water is to rough or we're exhausted from wakeboarding or, like I am now, someone is on the injured list from wakeboarding. I also fish a lot of bass tournaments in my bass boat too. I'm not against surfing but it's quickly making a bad name for all wake sports and there's several comments above that explain exactly why it's making a bad name.

Don't go to a cove where someone is fishing, pulling a skier, or even wakeboarding and start surfing if there's other places on the lake to go enjoy it. Especially if you notice a boat trying to teach someone how to do a water sport! Yes, lakes are for everyone to enjoy but showing some courtesy can go a long way.

As far as getting swamped by another boat that's 150 yards away, it's my responsibility, as the boat owner/operator, to keep that from happening. Don't get me wrong, saying sorry would be a great idea to as we need to all be able to get along on the lake.

When I'm out there in my bass boat and I'm coming around a surf boat it's also my responsibility to slow down and go over the roller safely. If I'm fishing on the main channel then I'm asking to experience some waves. However, if I'm fishing a cove and someone comes in after me and starts surfing or even wakeboarding then that pretty annoying. If someone is already in there and I want to fish then that's on me and it's my decision whether or not to fish there. If I do fish there then I have no right to complain about someone who was already there. Just my $.02.

From what I gather reading the 50 or so posts I feel like most are pretty responsible and courteous. I was actually thinking about my mistake of running water over the guys boat and translated that to driving my car . we all make errors in judgement...we pull out in front of someone when maybe we shouldn't have. its how we handle things after. that's where I fell short.

for what its worth on a Saturday afternoon when things are busy its likely I wouldn't have seen my rollers go over the back on the old MC with kids sitting on the back. usually the waves from other boats collide and its just plain rough. our season is slowing down so it was noticeable to me that I was the cause.

Tremendously disruptive. The thing about surfing is that the boat is not on plane like other watersports. So instead of your wakes going out and away from the boat you actually have huge rollers following the boat in the direction you are driving. There is no way to have a couple boats run the same line in wakesurfing like you can do in skiing and wakeboarding and everybody gets good water. This is why the wakeboarders and skiers dislike wakesurfing so much up in the Delta where there are narrow sloughs that can be shared by many boats on plane because there wakes go away from the boat to shore and dissipate. One wakesurfer sends rollers all the way down the slough and its over for everyone else.

This whole thread reminds me of the time Lockheed decided to test out a naval ship on a labor day weekend in Green Bay. The ship sent actual 6' rollers towards shore, damaged 100 some boats that were tied up on shore. After big investigation, Lockheed was found to be not at fault. They said boats ere not properly tied up. I believe they were going by international waters rules, not inland.

Dude was sitting there, he probably knew you were surfing . Yes you should apologize but yes he should of moved or watched and made sure his boat and crew are safe .

As far as surfing needing butter I agree with above but.......

You can't surf if extreme chop , it's very hard to do because the boat surges on every wave . When we surf I get away from everyone . Lucky for us we're on a gigantic lake and can find areas uninhabited to surf . It makes it more fun for us because we're not concerned with other boaters
