Rear facing camera suggestions for full screen video on 2016 G Lync 3.0

Hi, I have my old school Sony Handycam sending video to the LINC screen through SVideo out on the camera to SVideo in on the G dash. I just put the camera on the record position, but i don't actually record anything to the DV tape. For proof of concept, i put the camera on the dash on top of a piece of duct tape, zoomed it, and it stayed there and i was able to have a reasonably good rear facing view of the surfer on the Lync screen. Given the G mirror position being very close to the window so you have to look up, it was nice to look forward and see the surfer on the screen.

My question is, what 12v camera could be mounted on the tower or stern and would provide the same svideo line out and a 12v power line in so it is not running on batteries? I have poked around on Amazon, etc, and found they are named "bullet" cameras and are usually part of a home security system. It would be interesting to know the camera brand and model that comes with the 2017-2018 Gs, as that is probably what i am looking for.

Another option i have heard mentioned is running a go pro that is connected to a phone via bluetooth, and then running a line in from the phone to the media usb in the glove box which would provide a similar result. the problem with that solution is that i would always need the phone there and configured to do this. I am looking for something more permanent and not dependent on a phone as the interface.

    Great post.

If you want what Nautique uses, you could ask your dealer for the awareness cameras that are used on the GS boats. Do you have tower speakers and if so, 2 or 4? If you do not have speakers or only have 2, you can use the holes in the tower for the other 2 speakers to mount the camera to the tower. It may not be a perfect fit for the awareness or any other camera but you can add a mount in between (I would not drill into the tower). Video and power cable can be run through the hole for the audio of the speakers that are not installed or via a spliced audio flexible conduit attached with tie wraps to the tower (first option is obviously a cleaner look).

Other options for camera are CCTV or the bullet camera you mentioned, also used for CCTV. You can also use a backup camera which will be smaller.

Pay attention to the resolution and quality of the camera or you may not get good video on the display.

Both the video and power cable can be run inside the tower and then to the helm glove box to connect into the RCA video in and cigarette plug (or permanently to a fuse). Alternatively one could install everything inside the dash to not have cables in the glove box and have a cleaner install.

Before going through the work of the install, connect the camera directly to the RCA and power source to test for video and quality. Then place it where you want. If all is good, proceed with the install.

If you do this, please post a summary and pictures.

Thanks for the input. I already did a POC with my 2000 era Sony Handycam and the resolution was great, so not worried about quality. The wiring is just a detail, but thanks for the suggestions. I have 4 speakers by the way, and plan on drilling and mounting something permanent hopefully. My main concern is finding a small modern 'bullet' camera with a 12v in and a svideo out.

Subscribe, screen is small enough that 720 looks fine, in the sun 480 would probably even pass... And most $10 Amazon cameras are waterproof and at least that. I ordered a 120° wide-angle camera awhile back worked perfectly, but the image wasn't reversed. Decided not to mount it permanently for this reason, looking at the 18's a tower mount might be a better way to go than my planned transom mount. Keep us posted if you find a better solution

This is a great idea. What about a bullet reverse camera like those used for autos. Most if not all use RCA instead of S video . Does the LINC have an RCA input? I think my 2013 does but am not at the lake to confirm. Something like this could be mounted in the transom if you don't mind drilling a small hole. Also some have the option of clipping a wire to reverse the image if its not oriented to your liking. Would something like this work?

The one I bought looks exactly like the one pictured in the top of the Amazon listing, even came with a drill bit... Reading reviews just need to make sure the one you buy doesn't have the back up guides embedded in your picture. Installation/integration was super easy just plug the yellow rca into the video input on the dash. I was gonna wire a switch in the power line so that I could keep it from being powered up at all times. Anyone here an expert in electronics/rca cables of there is an easy way to flip the video image i would love to hear it... Thanks

Most of the ones I see listed on amazon have a small wire you can clip that changes the image orientation. The one I linked to says this in the description -

The default of this camera is Front View Camera with no distance scale lines, so to have the distance scale line turned on, just cut off the small white wire thats attached under the camera. And to use is as backup camera just cut off the blue wire thats also attached under the camera.

If yours doesn't have a wire to snip then your simplest option might be to buy another.

I used a camera similar to the one in the link that was included in the previous posts. It is so light that it can be attached with tie wraps.

The reason I suggested to test for video quality before installing the camera is because the video out of the camera that I used was not very good (it was a cheap camera and I just wanted to test the concept). One may rather know this ahead of time instead of after completing the install.

There are certainly lots of cameras that can be used. If you have 4 speakers you could consider installing the camera above the tower instead of below, like the awareness camera which is below.

Yeah, sellers must have gotten complaints a year ago that wasn't the case... That's why I was wondering if there is a way to disassemble the yellow rca video feed and cut something. Also I wanted a slightly narrower angle, feel like most of the back up camera FOV was too big... Fine for surfing but too wide for wake... So I bought a forward facing med fov... But like I said not seeing the image reversed plays with my brain

This is something I plan to add to my boat over winter as well. Seems like an easy DIY project for any boat with built-in video, my boat has 2 video inputs...I like the idea of a "shut off" to not constantly pull power when not needed since for me, surfing seems when it would be most useful and what we do 90% of the time. I feel like it may be easier at times to look down at screen rather than mirror and plan to mount a similar camera like posted above at my transom.
