We live at 6000 feet in Lake Tahoe and needed to get the 550 so we have enough power at that elevation. It’s a great engine for where we are and we have no issues with our decision. If you are at a higher elevation than maybe 3000 feet, the bigger engine is a good idea and possibly mandatory higher up.

I live at 2700 feet and the 450 is terrific.
It seems like it isn't much difference to go to Lake Powell at 3600 feet, but the boat is a little more sluggish there. I cannot imagine not getting to surf speeds, but the real test of a motor is getting from 14-19 MPH. If you plan on doing that with more than stock and greater than 3000 feet, the supercharger is a nice thing to have.
My dealer took a boat and propped it down with a 17 X 14 and took it to 6000 feet and the 450 did fine there. There would be a significant sacrifice in cruising speed with that prop, but if cruising is not what you do a lot of, then who cares?

cruise around the lake, but mostly just to find a nice calm spot to stop, float and relax. The deal we are getting on our boat with the 550 makes it worthwhile to have the extra power. Coming from a VTX with the 350 Monsoon, the 550 is going to be incredible! I don’t imagine we will ever have more than factory ballast in the boat, so the 550 will be amazing!

On the flipside you can say that your boat was owned by a pro surfer so that's a cool bit of information! Have fun!

Haha thanks! I realize it is definitely overkill for our purposes, but when we can buy that boat WITH the 550 for cheaper than one that is the same
model year with identical options except with the 450, it is a “no-brainer”. Add that to the fact that we love the color scheme...we knew we wanted it as soon as we saw it on the website. The fact that it was a boat owned by a pro surfer is also kinda cool, not that WE will ever get to that level!! Ha. I’ll be happy if I can let go of
the rope this summer! Bahahaha
