I’ve just recently finished up with my ballast install on my 2001 SAN. I will have pictures at the bottom of this post. Most of this info and pictures are on my resto thread but I figured I’d make a thread just for the ballast install to make it easy for others to look at while getting ideas for their own install.
For the last 3 years of owning the boat I have been running the stock 230# hard tanks in the rear with an additional 400# bag on top of each tank. I also ran a 580# bag in the center locker and I had a bag under the seats in the bow that I rarely filled up. All of these bags had to be individually filled with a pump I threw over the side. I also had 200# of leadwake I would move around to even things out.
At the end of this season I put an Acme 1616 prop on the boat which helped tremendously with power out of the hole and also holding speed at 21 to 24 mph. I decided it was time to spoil myself and go push button on my ballast. The time it would save will be beneficial because now we don’t have to get on the water 40 minutes before sunrise. Drop in at first light and you’re riding 5 minutes later.
Most people decide to go with 750# bags in the rear but I decided I would keep my 400’s back there for the time being. Mainly for space reasons. I bought 300# more of leadwake with a killer deal they had during Black Friday/Cyber Monday. I figure lead will take up less room in the rear compartment allowing for ample space to still have life jackets while the ballast is full. That was an issue I had before, when the bags were full on top of the tanks I had no room for jackets and I would have had the same issue with 750# bags.
