Hi all, I am new to this site and after doing some searching around, this seemed like a good place to start. I currently own a 1986 Silver Nautique that I am looking to sell in order to upgrade. The boat has 1750 hours, but was hoping to get some realistic opinions on what the boat is worth in the current market. It has a Monster tower, stereo, clean interior, and besides the few minor bumps and bruises the exterior is in pretty good shape as well. Look forward to hearing back.

There has been some discussion regarding to what extent the Silver (you have one of 82 made) gets a premium in price for being a Silver, as compared to other 86 Nautiques. I think the consensus is that, yeah, a silver, in otherwise equal condition, is worth a little more (1-2 thousand, maybe?) than a regular. But that is to someone who really wants a Silver because of its "specialness" and uniqueness. A bit unfortunately, the tower and graphics take away that advantage. Also, the 1750 hours is getting up there. I good clean unmolested silver is probably good for about 8-ish, maybe a little bit more. But this one, between the mods and the hours, is 2 or 3 grand below that, I would think. Ask your question over at CorrectCraftFan. They will have good feedback for you.

I would say the "upgrades" don't add any value. The tower and graphics could be removed with some effort and be made back to original. The stereo in the dash, which I assume was not original, is probably the worst thing as it's not easily reversed. However, most people would want a stereo and it doesn't look bad there.
There's probably a very small pool of people out there, like Jeff, who would be interested in it becasue it is a Silver. Most people, outside the CC community especially, would probably look at it and just feel it is overpriced if you try to get any more than an average 2001 of that age.

I see three possible buyers. 1 - someone who really wants an unmolested silver "classic" He's probably not interested, but if he's desperate and cant find another one and is willing to take on the project he will pick it up, but not going to pay silver prices for the work that needs to be done. 2 - someone who just wants a boat. Doesnt care that its a silver, but likes the tower and stereo, not a wake board fanatic so not paying for 2001 wakeboard performance. You lose the silver premium, but pick up a few points for the accessories that he may want. and 3 - someone who wants a price point wakeboard boat, since 2001's have a reputation for being a decent wakeboard boat. So he's going to like the tower and stereo, but doesnt care that it is a silver. So in each case, the price is knocked down for each type of buyer. Kind of like chocolate sauce on your cheeseburger. On their own, good, but together, really doesnt work. Not criticizing what you did to your boat, its your boat and you did what you wanted to make it like you wanted, which is fine. But sometimes that can impact resale.

Yeah, it definitely has some things that detract from the originality of the boat, but nothing that can't be fixed. The trailer appears to be in great shape, which is cool.
The condition of the stringers and other wood components will really need to be known before a true value can be placed on the boat. Also, what engine is in the boat? Got any engine pictures?
If I was going to purchase this boat, I would take it back to 100% original condition (remove the tower, new carpet, wet sand and buff the whole thing, disassemble the windshield and powdercoat the frame, replace the Silver Nautique decals, etc.).

Yep....with that tower added....and the Silver Nautique decals gone...that boat just lost $4000.00 easy.......I would take ANY other 86 over this boat....and I would grab a clean Silver at the drop of a hat......Just my opinion though........

Yeah, I contacted those guys. That boat came with an engine hoist, too, which I could have used. That one needed a ton of gel work though. The entire bottom side needed to be regelled.I own and operate Silver Cove Marine, which is an inboard boat restoration, service, and sales facility located in Mooresville, North Carolina. Brownt2, nice boat, love the black! I sold the 87' in my profile pic with 1,400 hrs, tower, board racks,6 speakers,12" sub, amps etc for $7,500 this past July. It had a lot of new parts and I owned it for 20 yrs. True, there are some out there that are looking for OEM boats but there are also a lot of people looking for affordable wake boats. Your boat is just that, and that is probably your market. If she runs strong and her stringers are solid, I don''t see why you couldn't get 7-8k from the right buyer. There is not a boat that can touch these wakes for under 10k, period. A wet sand, buff and good detail will go a long way, 303 should be your new best friend!Last edited by funkster; 02-26-2018, 09:51 PM.
