Trying to decide between the two boats to buy. Will mostly wakeboard and surf occasionally slalom. Concerned about the surfing behind the 230 with just stock tanks. Thoughts ?

surprised you are not checking out the 236. i suppose it depends on your budget.
stock ballast surfing behind the 230 is decent, but not great. with additional bags and maybe a wake shaper you can have one of the best surf waves around.
the 236 nautique was designed as a cross over boat and has one or two features set up for skiers. 230 or 236 will need some more ballast or weight up front and over the stock rear tanks.
as far as wake boarding, idk. i believe the 216 might be a better wake boarding boat. the 23X are big boats, 25.5' LOA
there is a reason why nautique is STILL producing the 230 with only slight changes to the hull over 12 years later. its a great hull.

May depend on what year 230 you are looking at too because there was a hull change in 2014 I believe that will make the set up different before/after these years. A stock 230 2015 with proballast (my currrent boat) surfed well stock (I am 6'2" 250lbs) but bigger is always better so I did upgrade to the 750lb sacs instead of the stock 400lb. Wakeboard wake is a little harder to clean up at slower speeds. If your gonna go slower empty everything except maybe a little in the belly tank and mess with the wakegate until you get the set up you like.
I have NO experience with a 236 so maybe someone else can chime in....good luck shopping!

Unless I've missed something, they only difference between the 236 and the 230 are graphics and vinyl. I think you could order the 236 without ballast and a tower but most will have those.
230 is considered a great surf boat and great wakeboard boat. The one issue is Wakeboarding the wake washes over at slower speeds so if you have beginners or kids it's something to consider. Ski wake is okay for a big V drive but if you want to do slalom, it's not ideal.
The 230 did change in 2014 and apparently was made better for surfing but there is no info on what the change was apart from fitting the NSS( Nautique Surf System) better. I assume you are looking at a pre 2014 if the other boat is a 216.
I know nothing about the 216 but I'd go with the 230 as if a more popular boat has a great rep and is bigger. Bigger is almost always better.

There was basically no difference in the two boats though, other than graphics and vinyl patterns.I own and operate Silver Cove Marine, which is an inboard boat restoration, service, and sales facility located in Mooresville, North Carolina. It surfs awesome! One of the best surf boats of that era. When we first got it we surfed it really listed because I couldn’t find a place where a shaper stayed put. But now we ride with a slight list and it’s a great wave.
