    H5 PCM in a G23.....?

Looking for boaters that have actually owned, operated, and/or worked with the H5 PCM motor in a G23. There are a few 2016 models out there for sale and trying to rule them in or out as a possible purchase (concerned but not overly concerned with resale). Have read/researched the hand full of threads here in our PN forums and also watched the N3 video.

With a wide spectrum in owning boats (current SANTE 230****sale pending, 22 Scarab w502, Fountain 35 Lightning w/T502, and the OG 12ft Scat Cat) there is no replacment for displacement. So when your stuck with the motor you change or modify the prop. A good machinist can add or take pitch or easily cup. I have had a couple props labbed over the years to match the engine with excellent results.

Anyone know if the ACME 2561 (from what I can find its installed with the H6) was installed in G23’s with H5? Knowing ACME props can be modified a very very little amount, ever consider the ACME 2569 with less cup or 2535 dropping the pitch to 15.5 or 2787 dropping diameter by .5 with the H5 setup.

Any G23/H5 insight would be greatly appreciated!

Thanks....boating season is right around the corner!!!

I have owned a 16 with H5, and now have a 17 with the H6. It all come down to what you do with your boat. We only surf so the H5 wasn’t an issue. If you mainly wake board with a large crew you would be wise to go with the H6.
Having owed both the H6 gets up and handles weight better. Fuel is close to the same, and resale is a little harder to get your price. We didn’t touch the prop as we have a small crew and it worked fine for us.
    Good luck with your choice

      I personally never owned a H5.
i tested it few hours in a 2017 G21. and i would not recommend it for a G23.. sure it can does the job.
      But it’s like having a Ford F-150 with the new 4cyl. Eco-boost.
you wil be able to drive but don’t expect to tow some weight with it.

thats said, you will be able to do what you do like surfing, wakeboarding, etc. But maybe have some lacks when ballast fully loaded and a large amount of people.
when we tried it we were 8 adult. When surfing it was OK, fuel consumption tho take a big hit.
Hard time getting to wakeboard wake too, but it still got it. I can’t imagine in a 23 when we were in a G21
very a matter of personal choices.
If you never have lot of people on your boat, why not it can do the job if they are well priced. Harder to resale tho.
The perfect motor for G23 is really a H6 and it’s not for nothing that many past years H5 G23 are available.

i bought a 2017 210 and the H5 wasn’t even an option for me, I loved the ZR409 and direct injection is not always the best thing in long term. Yeah it have pos but few cons too.
its a no brainer to keep the 5K H5 cost and buy some other more important options.
both are pretty much with same power. (One have more torque, the other more hp)
one can be filled with 89 fuel (with ethanol remover) and the H5 is direct injected so not putting prenium gas would result of soot injector fast.

They stopped selling the G23 with the H5 according to the nautique web site: http://www.nautique.com/models/super-air-nautique-g23.

That might give you some inputs on why people think this is not a good idea.

Good to know because I believe the H5 was a downgrade option available on the 2017 G23s but not on the 2018 G23s

I have owned a 2014 G23 with the H5, a 2016 G23 with the first H6 and a 2018 G23 with an H6. In total we put about 325 hours on these three boats almost exclusively surfing. The H5 burned about 7.5 gal/hour while the H6s have averaged 6.2 Gal per hour. We surf with 3-5 people at sea level and both engines had adequate power. The biggest difference to me was the ability to winterize the open cooling system of the H6 in about 15 minutes. Beyond that they were both more than adequate for surfing.

Yep good to know they don’t offer it anymore..
personally it just wasn’t a correct engine for this boat. Even for saving few bucks
