General wakesurf board rack topic also about trailering

Searched the forum several times about this topic didn't find exactly the answers I am looking for.

We have a couple of wakesurf boards on our 2016 G23 with the standard racks and without pockets on the bimini either. They are starting to be a bit annoying to manage while trying to also protect them. It seems some socks are in order at a minimum.

According to the other hits on the forum it seems either the Roswell Triton Vertical Clamping Board Racks or the PTM edge are options from a rack perspective. I am at the moment looking at the Roswell racks.

The thing is that I am wondering how those on this forum trailer home with their boards. I've got to solve protecting them on the boat, on the way home, and until they get racked at home. Is it a terrible idea to consider trailering with the boards in socks in the racks? Even for short distances?

There was some discussion about issues swinging the boards into the inside position due to speaker interference. Is it possible to stow the rack to the inside position and then lift the clamp and slide a board in or is this just not possible to do?

Your thoughts on these topics are greatly appreciated.

I just ordered the Triton's for my GS20 (well 4/27). Roswell has been out of stock and I am waiting for them to get sent still. Supposedly they will be back in stock this week and hopefully shipping by week end. I can take a pic of them swung in and let you know how easy it is to load/unload as well as speaker clearance.

As for towing with boards in the racks, not something I would do. I either put in the lockers or in the back of the truck for travel to/from the lake (truck bed has a cover and bed carpet so they are fairly protected in there).

I don't trailer my boat but if I did I would not be putting Plus $700.00 boards in the racks during transport; does not seem like a wise move. As far as Roswell Triton racks which I have on my G23 2017 , I can put 4 boards in them and they swing in fine under my stock 7.7 JL Audio speaker cans. I can't say if they will swing in ok if you have larger diameter speakers. I have 4 tower speakers. on my boat

I think you need to define short distances and just as important trailering speed. Slower speed and short distance would not concern me. The boat is a much rougher ride.

As a board builder I can tell you that you should DEFINITELY NOT be trailering your boat with boards on it, especially surfboards!

Another bit of advice I'll give you is to make sure you keep your surfboards on the racks deck side down! I've seen lots of damaged boards over the years from from being stuck in board racks, huge pressure dings and even holes put in the bottom side of boards from rough water causing the boards to bounce in the racks.

Ideally if you're going to be owning high end surfboards it's a wise idea to invest in a bimini with surf pockets to protect your investments.

Sounds like consensus on not trailering with board in rack, other input still welcome.

Get the Tritons, best upgrade you can make to your boat. They hold the boards better, keep them vertical and the water runoff stays out of the boat. We dinged a couple boards with the stock racks, probably from the boards bouncing into each other. Tritons have been solid and hook up great to the stock swivels - use the spacer that comes with them. We did eventually change over to the Roswell mag swivels, as they seem to lock in a little better with the Tritons than the '16 stock swivels, but stocks work great.

Get board socks, and keep the boards covered when not in use, The sun can heat the fiberglass up enough to melt the interior foam, especially if you have any dark graphics on the board, black edges, etc. We use these: https://www.dakine.com/en-us/bags/tr...surfboard-bag/

We bag our boards and carry them in the pickup bed to and from the lake. We use these: https://www.dakine.com/en-us/bags/tr...surfboard-bag/

If we didn't have an external sub in the coffin we might put boards in there, but with 5 or more surf boards going out each time we find it is more reliable to just put them in the truck bed in bags. That way we know they are protected. However, we may have forgotten the boards in the bed of the truck once or twice and had to go back for them. : )

I use the Creatures "day bag" for my soulcraft and I put my machine made board (Byerly Buzz) in the rack. The boards go in the back of the truck when trailering.

You can buy generic day bags for small surfboards on ebay for next to nothing. I purchased a bulk pack of 4 for my boards and they work just fine
