Budget Wake Boat Breakdown Chart, V1.1!

I designed a chart, and wrote a new entry on my blog associated to it, that visually maps out what many people consider to be the best budget sensitive platforms for building up a solid wakeboarding boat.

3 Correct Crafts are on the chart. I guess there is no suprise there, coming from me, but I do believe that the boats I put on the chart deserve to be there. It isn't completely comprehensive, but my hopes were that it could be shown to beginners, so that they can get an idea of what boat they'd be looking at, based on their budget dollar figure.

Nice chart Erik! As you said, this is something perfect for people as an 'intro to inboards' sort of thing, just to give them an IDEA of price ranges on used boats. Such a great and simple idea I'm surprised a company hasn't come up w/ it before.. :???:

Hey, wouldn't it be nice if Correct Craft down in Orlando had someone like Erik doing stuff like this for them? 8-)

      AbunDiga909 haha. Thanks.
I had been thinking about it for awhile. It just came about from answering the same questions many many times.

Excellent chart. It really hits home when you start considering the "cost versus benefit" relationship.

My 76 has about 1400 hrs, my Uncle's 84 has 1700 hrs, a family friend's 85 has 2700 hrs and my brother's 89 has 560 hrs. All look great and all run excellent. My Dad has a newer SN and truthfully, I prefer the older boats (looks and function).

The bottom line is, if you can buy a 80's model boat with low hours <800 at a good price, you've got a boat that will last you 10-15 years for 1/4 the cost of a new one. My brother just bought a cherry 89 for 10K and it has 560 hrs. Some might argue that that's a lot of money to pay for something that's 17 years old but his boat will depreciate about $4 over the next 5 years while a new boat will depreciate $10,000.

Why do all the lines, except for the 2001 line, go all the way to 30 grand?

M3Fan - to show that those models start at a certian price and extend to 30k. I non-scientifically consider "budget" to be approximately half of what the average high-end wake boat costs right now. That figure is reflected in the chart, as 30k. But that is the far upper end of the price scale, so don't worry.

I have to disagree on the depreciation issue. Five years ago I searched and searched for a clean 2001 hull boat. I could not find one for a good price. Back then 6k was a good price. I now see the same boats going for 8k. Part of this is due to the fact that the 2001 totally by error is a awesome wakeboard boat. In 1982 no one new what a wakeboard was!! That chart is going to push the prices up even more because more and more people are getting into the sport. It is just the simple law of supply and demand. I lucked out and got mine for an unspeakable low price. It had issues, but that is minor on these old boats. I am just glad I got mine when I did!!!

bchesley, I have been trying really hard - with www.the2001.com and with www.wakeboardreport.com - to show a more budget-friendly side of the sportand help people get past the misconception that the sport is impossibly expensive.

I didn't intend for that chart to push prices up, but rather to visually demonstrate what are considered to be the best boats ever built for wakeboarding, what they cost, and what the cost relationship is between them. And to show the bevy of boats that can be had if 30k is the upper limit of one's budget.

                  Erik,

I am not blaming you. You have put together a great list. I am just making a point that the 2001 has made a name for itself as a great wakeboard boat and demand has gone up because they are the best boat for the buck. I am actually glad the prices have climbed some although they will probable stabilize. I am an appraiser and analyze markets and demand factors so I look at thing differently than most. This boat is the one that you can buy to get into the sport. Keep it a year or two and then sell it for what you had in it. I know I could sell mine for more......

I am not selling right now. I finally got it paid for. My family is growing and might grow more in the future. So an open bow will probably be in my future. I have two boys and they will want to bring freinds. If it wasn't for size I would never sell it. I love it.........

                          Erik,

I wonder if there is a way to do the same type of graph for all the accessories that you'd need if you picked up a stripped boat. ie towers, racks, ballast etc. Then roll that back into the graph somehow.
