I am curious as to what the average top speed is for the boat. Our boat "seems" to be running fine, but honestly, 1. I do not know since its my first surf boat. 2. not sure of the "feel" when driving it. I personally think its not performing 100%, even though we can surf, wake, tube etc with no issues. After 20mph I feel its not solid.....a little like the rotor cap problem feeling. I also am only getting to about 28mph. Being that I have never been on one of these boats or driven them....I am really not sure. Thoughts? D

What prop do you have? That will make a difference, of course. Also, what RPM do you see at WOT with no ballast? I have the Acme 1578 which is good for heavier loads, but I can hit the rev limiter at WOT, around 45mph I believe. I never run flat out top speed, that's just what I recall from trying it last year as a point of reference. I'm sure I could squeeze a couple more mph out of the top end with a steeper prop, but it would be worse when loaded, so there's no point in that.
You're also at higher altitude, right? So you may want a prop with even less pitch? If it's misfiring you would have trouble getting up on plane with a load. You may just be over-propped for your use, like trying to accelerate onto a highway with your car in 5th gear at 30mph. You know?

I'm not sure what top speed is on mine as I don't care to ever see it, but I know at 3,500rpm I'm roughly running 32mph. I'm using the ACME 1464 which is the same as "functionoverfashion" is using... I'm sure I'd hit the rev limiter before seeing anything more than 45mph as well. I have no need to run more than 4,000rpm for an extended period of time though.Jason

You’re going to have to give us some more info like what engine, ballast, passengers, prop, wave shaper, water conditions. If your surfing fully loaded with a wave shaper, the boat will drive like a tank. When empty, the boat should have no problem jumping out of the hole and getting up to 30-35 no problem. What makes you to believe it’s a cap and rotor? Is it stumbling under load?

Empty boat...not ballast full at all.....goes about 30mph. On glass when its been running only about half hour it seems strong, responsive on throttle and smooth. After awhile I feel like I can't go much faster than 25 pulling people....which is fine, but just doesn't seem as strong anymore. I also start to feel what I compare to when I replace the rotor earlier this year. It feels like causing on gas, but then someone is tugging on the back of the boat every 5 10 seconds or so.
With the rotor problem, its go so bad the boat would go except idle,...when I replaced it, it ran strong, fine and responsive. Then this little feeling came back.
HISTORY: I am a new surf boat owner, I have no idea what this boat "SHOULD" feel like. I do feel resistance when pulling people, but I sort of expect that.......and then when I go against chop etc.....I feel resistance............but I figured on glass it should just rip smooth. And it does, but only for about 30 min.
This season replaced: rotor, roto cap, full filter, entire cooling system, spark plugs, spark wire harness, and ran three cans of sea foam.
I have had no problems surfing, wake boarding or god for bid tubing but man!.......from just a engine feel stand point, I just don't think its right.
I have a feeling someone like BLAMEY is going to recommend fuel pressure test. (I will be honest....I will do it, but I have no idea how to)
Thank you for everyones input.

As far as checking your prop, the part number and/or specs are usually stamped into the center hub around the driveshaft. Sometimes you can read enough with the nut in place, other times you have to take the nut off to see. Take a look at the prop in the center from behind the boat.
This season replaced: rotor, roto cap, full filter, entire cooling system, spark plugs, spark wire harness, and ran three cans of sea foam.
Was this all preventative maintenance? Or, did you do this because it was running poorly?
Are you running at high altitude, also? That can hinder performance, but having an appropriate prop will make a big difference.

Probably the same engine as you in my SV211 with Acme 644 (stock prop I believe) and I can hit 42 on glass no problem with boat empty. Also, when I hit the throttle at 22 on my 211 when empty on glass it shoots forward like there’s a lot more power to give. If you’re not feeling that you have an issue or a prop difference.

Based on the fact your profile shows you're in Steamboat Springs I will assume high altitude... You need something better than the 536, 644 props that came stock. This will have nothing to do with the issues you are experiencing though... Since you have replaced spark plug wires I would go back and make sure you have them all in the correct place... 2 wires being swapped will make a dramatic difference in performance under load! I would also check your water separating fuel filter to make sure you don't have any water in there even after you replaced the filter. Checking fuel pressure is a good idea as there are 2 pumps and I've seen others with poor running conditions that have a bad low pressure fuel pump. The low pressure pump pulls fuel up from the tank to feed the high pressure pump (FCC). If the low pressure pump is bad the FCC isn't designed to pull fuel from the tank which could show low pressure at the fuel rail. I would check the pressure at idle no load and while running under load while you feel the poor performance you describe. I don't know the pressure requirements, but I'm sure someone here will or you could try asking a dealership.
Checking compression on each cylinder might not be a bad idea, but I'd check the easy stuff first as most likely it will be something small you are overlooking. like described above. But if you have a cylinder low on compression it could cause similar symptoms... The intermittent issue like you described is a bit puzzling to me, that's why I first suggest looking at the plug wires.Jason

Last three threads...thanks a ton....all beginning work was one because of a over heat issue, two was because it was new to me and wanted to put some fresh into it first. Plug wires has me wondering. I know I put them in the places they were first (but maybe they were wrong in the first place) because I did one at a time end at a time to make sure they were exact. HOWEVER, not sure how to explain this, but when you take them off, you can feel the metal under your thumb and finger coming off the head of the plug etc. when you put them on, you can feel the metal go onto the head. Question: I had two that when going onto the rotor cap, I didn't really feel that connection. When I look into rubber cap, I felt this plastic piece was higher in the opening than the metal loop. (not sure if that makes sense at all) But all in all, I just didn't feel the metal feeling under my fingers like the other ones. Could this be the problem? Also...the boat felt this way prior to me switching out the wires.....I just did the wires on Friday and I was using it all weekend. I still felt it on the glass. Thoughts?
I will get the prop number off and see what it is....thanks for the advice. I am running at about 7-8000 ft elevation.
Thank you all, I appreciate it.
