Apparently "Fully Loaded" doesn't mean what I think it means...

    Gang,

I see a lot of boats for sale on BoatTrader, OnlyInboards and here on PN listing the boat as "Fully Loaded." Now when I hear that term used to describe a car or a boat, I think "It has every upgrade and option that isn't mutually exclusive." All of them. Now I might make an exception for the engine because there are some places that really NEED these 6.2L supercharged engines because of altitude or some other special case. Outside of that, "fully loaded' means it has pretty much every option available at the time the boat was ordered.

So what I'm seeing is a lot of boats advertised as "fully loaded" that simply aren't. They're don't have heated seats, or underwater lights, or the awareness cam or something. I saw one today on BoatTrader that was listed as Fully Loaded and it only had about 6 or 7 options total. Not even close as far as I'm concerned.

Anyone know what's going on with this?

The saltwater listings are even worse. Every single boat says maintained with an open checkbook. I’ve seen some real stinkers advertised as CLEAN!

As far as fully loaded maybe some people just think certain options are useless so they didn’t even consider it and therefore to them the bot is loaded with the options that are relevant to how they use the boat? To be honest I put zero weight in the owner’s description of the boat. I ignore anything that is not objective.

Fully Loaded = Every option available. People often make that claim without knowing what they are selling. In my experience, those are the same people who fail to properly maintain their equipment, as well. I always ask people to provide a list of all options. Or, if is loaded except for a few options, I ask for an exception list.

Charles, I appreciate you bringing up the topic here for discussion. I saw that you called someone out about this in their own ad, which I thought was pretty crappy on your part. But I didn't want to make it worse by commenting in their ad...

"Fully loaded" is a marketing term which is used indiscriminately. Yes irritating, but like was said above it is kind of - in my opinion - up to the buyer to determine what options are included vs offered.

Dealers don't put prices on their for sale ads, that bugs me more than fully loaded ads. Boat sellers are going to dress up their listing to attract people... bottom line id s savvy buyer is going to compare what options on boats they are looking for and size up the value add or what it is lacking to decide the best boat that fits them. What the ad says is really not that relevant. Having a price, good pictures and the relevant details is what really matters to have a genuine ad. As a seller of recent boat the ones who email a low price and ask no questions is very annoying I like to mess with those inquiries

Gotcha. I think the problem I have with these ads that say "fully loaded" when it isn't is just trust. I figure if they're misrepresenting the options and upgrades, what else are they misrepresenting? Are they faking the maintenance records? I know if I was looking for a preowned boat, I would really take an honest ad much more seriously than one that said "fully loaded" when the boat clearly isn't.

Agree, they probably 90% of the time know it not really fully loaded and would probably be disingenuous on other things too.

So depending on the buyer, saying "fully loaded" when not probably does the seller more harm then good.

Another perspective is the boat owner is not as versed in boats as those of us on this forum and they were sold the boat as “fully loaded” from the dealer and they have no idea there are options available that are not included on their boat.

Good point. I guess if they bought the boat off the showroom floor - rather then ordering - they might have no idea.

And that's entirely possible and even acceptable. I appreciate you pointing that out.

Several weeks ago someone advertised a 230 on here as "Fully Loaded" and I sent him a private message saying "sorry, no, it's not and the group here is pretty savvy. You should change it." And instead of changing the ad.... he gave me some BS line about how all those missing options were "on order and hadn't come in yet." Come on, man. Yea, you could do heated seats after-the-fact, but it would be very, very expensive.

Wow. That was literally funny that the seller said on order. Thanks for sharing. Good laugh...

Yea, if you are savvy enough to know to advertise in this site then you should know available options for sure.

Now days these boats have tons of available options and I think people are too lazy to list everyone. Its just easier to say "Fully Loaded". I don't agree with this practice, but I think it does happen a lot.
