    Marine survey??

    Good day folks,

I recently found a 2007 SV211 with 500 hours. The boat is as mint as as they come and this was the 10th one that I had seen since I’ve been shopping since June.

I have a friend that has a 2005 and been a fan of these boats hence the reason I joined the forum before owning one!

My main issue is the boat is winterized...however the dealer will honnor a 30 warranty from the day I put it in the water next year.

My question to you guys is, what are your thoughts on having a survey done for the boat?

They go for about 500$ Canadian.

I appreciate any comments on this one.

Waste of money in my book. I've sold boats and the sellers required them, surveyor came out, we drove around for a couple min, he left and that was it. If the boat is winterized, what can they see that you wouldn't already see for yourself anyway? Marine survey is more applicable to a yacht, houseboat, or big sail boat. Buy the boat, put it on the water now, and then re-winterize it. It's so easy to winterize these boats I wouldn't want to buy it and go through the winter not knowing if there is an issue. If its a dealer, maybe even work a re-winterization into the deal. It literally takes 1 hour.

^this. ItÂ’s not too late to get a test drive and have them rewinterize it. Work it into the deal as the dude said. I had a dealer do this for me on a boat I bought out of town. I had them fire it up in the shop on the hose and then rewinterize it for me. I sent them a deposit though to show I was serious and they sent me videos of it. If this is a local dealer to you, you could be present for that if you canÂ’t get it to the lake. No way would I pay for a survey without running the boat.

PS - good luck! I have a 2004 SV211 and really enjoy it. I bought it sight unseen.

I would run it and re-winterize even if you have to pay to have it redone. I would not survey this small a boat.

I would insist on a compression test and test drive.

But if you want this done your surveyor may need to hire a certified mechanic. Something to ask up front if you want it done as part of the survey. Or perhaps you need a mechanic instead of a surveyor.

All the things listed in this thread can be done by the dealer offering the boat. I would insist on all of these items. A dealer ought to jump through all these hoops to make a sale in October since it’s the offseason and they may very well be holding that boat until the spring.

franchise dealers. most indy's are NOT going to pay to have a ECM history retrieved. that's a go fast boat thing.

                  moisture content you don't need.

but i will agree with compression check, service history and test drive.

So I’m test driving it tomorrow. We agreed to dewinterize and redo it.

I’ve already looked and felt all around the engine bay for anytime of leakage.

I was thinking of testing all the electronics, ballast fill/empty and perfect past.

Of course the overall performance and feel...I will also bring a buddy you has a 05 SV211.

Is there anything else / specific I should be looking for?

                    Tx

Of coarse any drive line vibration would be something to look out for. Another train of thought, The owner of a boat that appears in the condition as you describe is picky and does not allow his boat to be in disrepair. They did not have it winterized knowing there was a motor or drive-line problem needing repair. Going into winter, this would be the time to have it repaired in the off season. As long as you can check it out tomorrow verify smooth operation at all speeds. Verify all electronics work properly. Having your friend verify proper electronic operation will be great. Make a list of questions and give a copy to your friend so he can help ask questions. All of the things listed above in this post can be done and are usually recommended. If the boat is as nice as you state you have nothing to worry about. Check the oil dip stick. Oil should be clean. No foam appearing substance anywhere on the dip stick. If there is foam appearing substance on the dip stick this means there is a blown head gasket, or cracked head or block. This would be a huge problem and knowing why this occurred is key. This is all repairable and all negotiated in to the price. Keep a poker face. You know you are going to like it. It is October in Canada, storage for the next six months + is going to cost even if it is owned by a dealer. You purchasing this boat tomorrow saves someone this storage fee, You should be able to at least get the winter storage fees off of the price. Just some bargaining tools to think about.
