Steel Shot Bag Containers

I was having problems with my steel shot bags getting mildew on them in the midship area of my boat because they were getting wet. Based on the advice of another member, I ordered these 14 inch heavy duty poly ziplock bags from Amazon then put the shot bags in plastic containers with lids . This should relieve my problem and any possibilities of staining my Seadeck. Pictures of my installation below.

Been thinking about putting my lead bars in containers like that. They have never stained anything, but I always worry about it, and I also think the containers would make my bars easier to move. Mine are just basically lead bricks.

I had more problems with the bags getting mildew on them since they were getting wet from my bumpers I store midship. I sprayed some bleach and water on the bags to remove the mildew before I put them in these plastic containers

This is why I prefer the Pop Products bags over any other competitor . Over 12yrs of use stuffed under my bow , still look as brand new as the day I bought them. Their vinyl type bags are bombproof and wipe clean instantly.

I too have 200 lbs of steel shot bags crammed in the bow without containers because it does not get wet in that area. If we want to to go off topic on this thread both Pop and Wakeballast/LeadWake design bags have their +/-.. Pop may be more water resistance but hands down Wakeballast design are easier to handle . In addition these containers, minimize the bags moving around on my Seadeck area

My bow gets pretty wet. My boat sits on an uncovered lift most of the summer , weather and humidity changes leave that bow area pretty damp , not too mention I have few rookie drivers from time to time. Also have 4 of them in the same spot your have yours in that pic on the passenger side of my boat to counterbalance prop rotation. Don’t know how mentioning which bags have the best mildew and mold resistance, as well as resistance to stains in a topic discussing how to prevent that from happening is considered off topic, but glad you found a work around for your bags.

Thanks . I had meant this post to show a solution to my problem which may help other members with similar problems. There is already another thread comparing Pop bags to Wakeballast/Leadwake design bags probably more appropriate to note why one bag type is better than the other.The jab on that post to me is probably more relevant than here.

I'm sorry, but this makes no sense to me. The wake ballast bags don't make moisture. The mildew occurred because moisture was under the bags. I think you will still have the same problem but it will now occur under the plastic container instead.

Gregg you may be correct , I’ll report back early summer with my results. Prior to spray bleaching on my bags , they looked like leopard skin (pockadots) where the mildew was coming through the fabric covers

Let us know what you learn. Living in the Seattle area we get our share of mildew. I find that I will get it unless I completely empty all storage areas... Almost any surface will trap moisture resulting in mildew over the winter months here.

My bags are never removed which may be my problems with mildew

I left them in my boat the first year we were here in Seattle and I consequently learned about mold and mold remover. Now in the winter my lead bags go in the back of my pickup for better traction in the snow. The others are stored at my dock.

Not sure what jab you’re referring to ......I was not taking a jab at you.......My post here was simply to help someone in the future who will probably run across this thread when searching steel shot bags from having to deal with the same issues you’re trying to overcome . The issue here is the bag material, it’s a canvas type which is porous and prone to mold. Boats are a wet nasty place ,especially if you’re storing them outside on lifts and not in temp controlled garages. Another option you may consider is to treat the canvas material with a waterproofer much like you treat a canvas cover. Might help to bead the water away from the material rather then soak it In. I pretty much see the same issue still happening to the bags themselves,only now it will just be contained inside the plastic container,obviously better than all over your seadeck. That may be a perfectly viable solution for you, but it also may not because the bag still gets nasty . Only time will tell if that is the case. My post was to give a solution to the issue with a product I’ve used for over 15yrs that has never presented a mold issue.

Yey to Pop bags , nothing compares they are the best on the market . Can withstand all elements wet, dry . Hail to Pop bags .
