Not to start a disagreement, but consider that the climate in Northern Illinois may have more to do with your not having a mildew issue than the Pop Bags? Pop bags are made from Vinyl. The Wake ballast bags are made from Cordura which is also a nylon. Inside the Wake ballast bag is a heavy plastic bag protecting the steel shot so the bags will not store moisture. Mildew requires the relative humidity to be above 50%. In Seattle over the winter I get mold on my vinyl oar, nylon rope, vinyl bag that houses my anchor, the bottom of my vinyl cooler, or just about any surface that was stored wet. I'm absolutely sure I would have mildew if I left a pop bag on wet sea deck over the winter here.

Greg. Where do you store your boat, do you leave it outside? I’m on the west coast as well and have never had a problem over the winter when boats in storage. Made sure everything was dry in the fall and left everything in place. Now in the summer, yes I have gotten some from not letting things dry but nothing major.

We store our boat on a lift in a covered slip at the marina. Seattle average temperature in the winter is about 40 degrees F. Mildew will not usually grow below freezing. Furthermore its 50+% humidity all winter long so we have prime conditions for mildew. We surf until late November long after the wet season has begun, so it's nearly impossible to keep the boat dry when we put it away. I have to completely empty it and lift all of the seats for circulation or we will get mildew.

I should add that mildew was also a problem when I lived in Florida. There I trained as a competitive waterskiier. I skied all year long, 4 to 5 days a week. I kept my Ski Nautique in my garage. But I had to install a ceiling fan over my boat to dry the interior to prevent mildew. It will occur in any dark, humid environment that remains above freezing.

Over the past winter I stored DampRid pals in the stern lockers, DampRid hangers in the midship and observer areas and low profile DampRid containers in the bow. When I took my cover off yesterday from the winter, I did noticed it had helped with some of my dampness issues and the musty smell was gone.

What all of you are calling mold is most likely mildew. They are similar but these days the mention of the word "mold" sends people into hysteria...

Yea, that stuff works. It's very popular here!

You are exactly correct. Mold usually grows on food. This is mildew. I have edited my previous posts. Good catch.
