24 MXZ vs Nautique G23 - A surf comparison video

Who's seen this comparison video? I'm wondering what everyone thinks of the G-23 wave in it. Realize this is a paid review, by Malibu, so it is biased. But I have surfed the MXZ-24 and it is a beast, much better than the traditional Malibu surf wave. I have not surfed a G yet, and was just curious everyone's input on how its surf wave looks in this review. How realistic is the comparison?

If you look at the video creators profile on Vimeo you will see they did many comparisons between different Malibu/Axis and other brands.

They add after-factory external bags to the Malibu as well. In their testing methodology they state that if the boat has a plug and play ballast feature, they add bags.

It is possible that nautique has some catching up to do, as the g series is basically running a 2013 hull with a tweak for spray.

Based on my experience on axis and malibu products it would not surprise me at all if the nautique is NOT the best anymore. I was super impressed with how easy it was to set up the surf wake on my friends axis a22. The wave was super long and clean.

From a fit finish and storage perspective I prefer my g. From an overall wave perspective i prefer axis/malibu.

I STRONGLY PREFER my g21 from a wakeboarding perspective for one simple reason: I prefer a wakeboard boat with low bow rise. I experienced a lot of bow rise on malibu and axis products wakeboarding. We could have brought the bow down, but then the wake was just meh.

I know we stated our opinions then, but you can't find a Malibu without the plug and play sacs, so running it without would have been totally biased. Blue, do you have friends who have Malibu surf boats without PNP? The local Malibu dealer tells me that EVERY surf boat they have sold goes with the sacs. Find me some evidence that the sacs are only an 'extra' and I will quit pointing out the Kool-Aid you are drinking. Plug and play sacks might as well be a standard feature for Malibu, it is just a simple fact. It means the rear storage is very limited. Tower is an option for Malibu, maybe they shouldn't have included that, either?

The number of standard features on the G is very robust, on Malibu, everything can be optioned out.

The G wave looks suspect in the video, and not up to par with what most owners experience.

Like Scott said, G23 is an old design. It was the best when it came out, but a lot has changed. Still offers you a great boat with an unbelievable amount of storage and a great fit and finish. Even the G23 haters can’t take that away. There’s just better options out there now for a surf wave imo.

It would be a better "comparison" if the ballast setup and numbers were also posted, this review seems obviously biased....but that is how marketing works. In this video, it did seem like the G23 was leaning slightly to the non-surf side, that will do exactly what video showed, which is make the wave dirty looking.

I have been surfing a few times this year behind a 2019 Malibu LSV, the wave is better than previous years with surfgate and it is easy to setup/dial, I was actually pleasantly surprised since in previous years the waves looked pretty but did not have the push and length that I prefer in a wave, like others have said, it came with all the extra bags. Still runs a bit bow high on the model I have been behind and you cant run full wedge unless more weight was added to bow over the seats (has a tank under bow but its not enough for whats available in rear when you add the wedge....3 clicks of wedge is the most we could use without the wave getting too short). Rpm's have come down too with the new engines, this one does not scream like other Malibu's I have been behind.

Been on several G23 & G25 boats and all of them needed some extra weight over factory setup to get optimal wave (which was very good), I have not seen any come from factory that included all the upgraded PnP. Adding the bigger PnP bags and lead and the wave went to excellent. I still give the nod to Nautique on fit/finish

IMO, all the new/newer boats are quite good and it comes down to what you prefer since they are all a little different on setup and type of wave they put out depending on how you set them up. Good dealer support is huge

This is a marketing video. Plain and simple. It is bought and paid for by Malibu boats. None of us have any idea how it was REALLY set up. ****, they could have thrown lead in the bow to keep it from popping a wheelie like nearly every other Malibu I've ever surfed (minus the 25 LSV). No company would ever lie in marketing would they? Plus, surf waves are totally subjective. I went on a guys trip to Norris lake 3 years ago and brought my 2016 G23. My buddy brought his 25 LSV. Half of the guys there preferred the G wave. The other half preferred the 25 LSV. Both great waves. Just different.

If you really are considering both boats, go demo them and experience them. These videos are what they are. Biased marketing trash.

Agreed. Not to say one is better than the other, but it’s still just marketing. Every boat manufacturer does it. Definitely agree on demo if you get the chance and pay special attention to the dealer. It makes a difference.

I had an Axis with PNP that came without the bags. I have never seen a Malibu at a boat show with PNP bags installed in them, nor have they been on the late model Malibu and Axis boats I have demoed. It is a third party aftermarket option.

My point is that the bags do not come from the the factory, nor is there a dedicated space for them - they fill the lockers. Whether the dealer puts them in or not, they are not from Malibu and are ordered separately from Fly High or whomever. Just because Malibu has a way to plumb aftermarket bags into its ballast system does not make sticking external bags in lockers and under seats "stock ballast" in my book. It is something that is added on. As I mentioned in the other thread, add the same aftermarket weight to the other boats tested if you want an apples to apples comparison - pretty simple really.

If Nautique said there were special Nautique bins to put 1,000 pounds of lead bags in, and every dealer put them in, I wouldn't consider that stock either.
