So I took my 07 SANTE 220 out of storage for the summer, hooked it up to the fake lake and it fired right up first try. I had to have an oil and impeller change done at the local marina so I dropped it off there. They called me and said the starter was bad which I found odd since it just started without an issue. So I figured no biggie I took it home and swapped out the starter. When I tried to start it again the engine would crank then seem like it got jammed and lock up. It would not start and definitely does not sound good when it locks up. Is it possible they put the timing belt back on wrong? What could they have possibly screwed up and what should I be worried about in the future? I am dropping it off today for them o look at tomorrow again.

If it were mine I’d probably pull the plugs and try to turn it over by hand. I guess it’s possible they put the serpentine belt on wrong so maybe the water pump is not working correctly and it overheated but not sure you can do that with the correct size belt.Last edited by Shawn Henderson; 05-05-2019, 11:10 AM.

I agree. Pull the spark plugs and turn it over by hand. Check the starter for rotation direction. I remember when I was younger we changed the starter on our older Mastercraft and it wouldn’t start, only to realize the starter was wrong. Same model, just different rotation.
Not sure if this is a possibility in newer engines, but may be worth a look.

Water in the cylinders (causing hydrolock) could be caused by lots of things. My immediate concern is that the engine may not have been winterized properly, and if cracks happened in the right place(s), cooling water could be forced into the cylinders by the pressure of your fake-a-lake hose. That water won't compress, and will cause the engine to lock up. Removing the spark plugs will allow the water to escape, and the engine should spin again.
If the starter really did go bad, it is possible that the new starter is the wrong rotation, like noted above.

Sounds like it is hydro locked. I expect that your impeller is bad and it was just starting to get hot when you started it and turned it off. Upon this sequence the motor dieseled and suck water back into the cylinders.

I agree on the sounds of hydrolock. But that’s a pretty crappy diagnosis by your marina to call it a bad starter and move on. Did they winterize it too?

Sounds like it was hydro locked.. I had a 07 220 and blew a belt while riding.. changed the belt on the water and it was locked up. Brought it home and changed the starter and same thing.. Pulled the plug and spun it over and she was full of water. Changed the oil and she ran for another 5 years no issues.

Yes you have to remove the serpentine belt to change the impeller. Perhaps the term they are using is incorrect.
