Nautique GS22 + Additional Ballast Bags = Problem?

Hi guys. I'm new here, new to boating, and new to wakesurfing. But I have a question that I would love to have answered by more opinions.

I purchased my boat (2017 GS22) new last August. Being new to all of this, my family and I struggled for a while to learn how to get up on the surfboard. I (being 250lbs) found it very difficult/impossible to find enough push to let go of the rope. This changed when we had some family members (who are on the heavy side) join us for the weekend. I discovered I had a lot more push in the wave and was finally able to drop that rope. Man what a feeling! So I realized that for my fatbutt, I was gonna need some extra weight in the boat.

So I purchased the additional ballast bags for the rear lockers. This was all done through the dealership as their recommendation. By the time they were installed, I only had time for maybe 2-3 rides until it was too cold for us to ride anymore (we are wimps when it comes to colder temps lol). Therefore, not a lot of testing was able to be done. I did notice however that the on-screen gauges did nothing to represent anything close to accuracy.

This is my problem that I'd like opinions on.

Before the bags were installed, If you filled the stock ballast all the way it would read 100%, as it is supposed to. If drained all the way, it reads 0%. Having just got my boat back out for the new season (after having it winterized and obviously not able to test the ballasts), I'm seeing the same problem as before. At this moment, when I start the boat, it's reading 32% bow, 82% port, 78% starboard. It is supposed to be "empty". Meaning closer to 0%? I press "drain all", and I hear the pumps whir (sounding like they are dry) the percents do not go down.

The tech has come out twice concerning this issue. Once last October - to address the issue and winterize (obviously I couldn't test it myself then), and 2 weeks ago. He told me that the readings on the screen would never be accurate (like 75% won't be exactly 75% - and that makes sense). But I can't help but feel like 0 and 100 percents should be absolutely accurate, or at least close.

Especially if I drain all ballast before parking the boat on the lift (I was told to look for bubbles coming from the side of the boat), then restart later, shouldn't it read 0% in the tanks?

The technician is supposedly still trying to work out the problem, waiting on a callback from an engineer at Nautique. Meanwhile I honestly don't know if there is water in my ballast or not, nor how much. It is especially irritating considering this is a new boat, and one of the main reasons I went with a new boat was due to the fact it has great digital software and screen.

I'd love to hear your feedback on the issue. Thanks.

have you actually filled them this year? maybe the senders are "stuck" and need to be unstuck by filling the tanks.

Yes, the technician and I took the boat out a little while ago to test the ballast issue. We filled and drained entirely (filled until water spits out, drained until bubbles were shown), and the readings were again, all over the place.

Update - they are going to pick up the boat and take it into the shop to totally check it out and figure out what's going on.

It is my understanding that the system has to be updated to register the new ballast.

I’m also a big heavy guy and have experience on the gs22. The most important thing is getting the right board. Get a nice big surf style board and that will make a world of difference.

You could have two issues here. First, The ballast system works off of two systems for reading levels (1st pressure, 2nd timer). there is a pressure sensor in the bottom of the subfloor bag, these sensors have warranty issues because water gets into the backside of the connector and it will read incorrect pressure. Your dealer should be well aware of these specific sensors. If you unplug the sensors (or if they show an open circuit) the system will use its timer system. The timer system won’t work for you because your linc doesn’t know about the extra bags. Hopefully, the dealer added the factory upgrade pro ballast bags (two 350’s) and they can just update the linc for the pro ballast system and the timers will be adjusted to match what you have.
