    2019 G improvements — ones I didn’t know about or weren’t

Thought I would share. Having 700-800hrs on my previous Gs, I thought I knew them pretty well, between my own boats and being on lots of other Gs.

a week into 2019 G ownership there are several improvements to the Gs I didn’t know about till now.

    1. Seat foam is improved. You may have seen my post a few month back about how Mastercraft seat and upholstery padding is light years ahead. Something has definitely improved at least from my 2014. While I still wouldn’t put it ahead of MC’s... it’s not far behind. Definitely improved and in the ballpark.

    2. Rear locker slide in panels have braces now to keep them from jumping tracks from large Fatsacs. So get the big 1100s and plumb them in. And they have hooks for ropes and ski rope management.

    3. The big JL Stereo is very impressive. Mine has the 4x JL towers, 2x subs and the Wavefront. The integrated 4 zone controller in the dash is legit. This is the custom $8-10k stereo sound we all paid for years ago.

    4. All the ballast seacocks have mechanical servos on them... they automatically open the seacocks when draining or filling ballast, and then close when the pumps are shut off. So the shenanigans of emptying ballast while underway, or filling on their own overnight are over.

    5. High quality and sturdy battery mounts... and very high quality Group31 AGM batteries. Not the junk black plastic boxes that have been used since WWII.

    6. The new windshield is very very nice. And the vents in the corners are very nice.

    7. Everything about the Rhino-lined power folding tower is A+. The Bimini continues to improve, the quick release knobs make raising and lowering super easy.

    8. A++ on the H6 blue plug water drain winterization setup. Very nice.

    Critiques:

    1. Put the remote Oil Filter Assy in an easy to reach location at the FRONT of the engine, with an oil drip tray directly underneath. Not cool to make the owner do a fetal position squat in a trunk to change the filter. And add 12” to the oil drain hose geeze.

    2. I don’t trust that Battery Selector Perko switch. WAY too hard to turn... will this one break and rip apart too like it has on me 3x previous times? No snapped drive shafts for me... but 3x broke perkos have kept me off or broke down on the water.

    3. Return the driver’s mini glovebox ASAP. Needs to only be big enough for keys, wallet, phone... and small compact “items” that need to be kept close. Extra points if you make it semi-sturdy lid and locking.

    4. Put a slow-drop hinge on the windshield folding portion, both up and down. Our kitchen cabinets have them, truck tailgates gave them. End the boat owner’s terror anytime a child 10yrs and under touches that center windshield.

    5. I can strict curl somewhere around 90-110lbs, and military press 135-150lbs+... who in their right mind thinks those tension rods on the ugly Klingon Warship board racks are ok? No one, other than me, and a Klingon Warrior will be able to operate those racks. Ridiculous. Are we supposed to balance ourselves up on the gunnels and deadlift it? Complete failure.

    6. Water drain management. The main Starboard cockpit floor drain dumps onto an electrical junction in the engine bay. Come on Nautique, don’t go backwards. 12” tube draining onto the bilge floor. Not onto exposed electrical Every time someone is wet in the boat.

    7. Stop with the CYA risk warning screen “Click here to not sue Nautique” screen. Really? Every startup?

I still own my first ever new boat purchase Nautique--2007 SV211. I don't surf, have no audio in my boat, keyed ignition, and no fancy electronics. But I will say, I lurk on this board and may buy a new boat someday. I do appreciate honest, straight forward, no BS comments like nyryan2001 always seems to provide.

Very good info. Im dealing with number 4 on your list right now on my 2017 G23. I'm hoping changing the starboard impelller will eliminate my "Ghost Ballast Fill" problem as I believe water is leaking in from between the impeller vanes while boat sits in the water overnight.

Great write up! Totally agree on the Klingon “dead lift” board racks. The concept is great but the execution is lacking for the majority of my family who struggle to balance up on the side wall and lift the arm to clear the board.

That is very strange. My 2016 had the automatic shut off valves, doesn't the 2017 have them?

In older boats, NYRyan noted that if you put a new impeller in each year, the siphoning is much less. Although an old impeller might work perfectly, it does allow some passive flow to set up a siphon.

Don’t know but I have leakage into the ballast tank on starboard side after boat had been sitting in the water after several hours . Will see if new impeller relieves my leakage . Will report back with the results after I install it

Yep older ballast impellers leak much more.

if you use your ballast a lot... change ‘em our yearly for best fill/drain and anti leakage performance

If you have the automatic shut off valves, that is the problem, not the impeller. If the valve shuts off properly, refilling of the tank is impossible. There is a long rod that attaches to each shut off valve. It is easy to see down in the ballast pump area when you open the hatch.

Thanks ok I will check those as well.

So what you are saying is the 2017 have these automatic seacocks like nyryan describes in his post on the 2019s? His quote below..

"4. All the ballast seacocks have mechanical servos on them... they automatically open the seacocks when draining or filling ballast, and then close when the pumps are shut off. So the shenanigans of emptying ballast while underway, or filling on their own overnight are over."

I agree with that #5 critique. Those things are ridiculously hard to lift. So much so I worry about board damage. My wife cant lift them and the kids have to stand on the seats which drives me bananas.

I also would like a mini glove box.

The hinge on my windshield is really stiff or has resistance so the windshield doesn't slam shut. It closes slowly. I thought that was a new feature this year. Maybe yours needs to be adjusted??

                        Nice write up.

I have a '16, and do have some envy for the larger display. But... I am not a fan of the look of the new style dash, and it seems less functional. I agree, bring the drivers glove box back.

On the ballast impellers - we change out every 50-75 hours or every season or so. We usually have one start to misbehave sporadically by then, and have had one go completely bad in as little as 30 hours. You can tell when you have one starting to go as you will have occasions where a pump seems like it wont prime. You can usually get all three for $100 or so, and they take 15 minutes max to replace - cheap insurance for not ruining lake time. I hang on to one or two of the best looking used ones, coat with petroleum jelly and throw in the glove box for emergency spares - but have never needed one. At some point I might try to get a season out of my spare collection.

Yes. It was a mid 2016 year change, IIRC. Some of the 2016's don't have them, and some do. NYRyan's previous boat was well before that.
