Hard water spots

Unfortunately both the tap water and our Lake water leaves really bad water spots all over every surface of the boat. And they are quite difficult to get off. Has anybody found any kind of surface treatment that prevents water spots from forming? I don't even know if something like that exists.

The only way to keep them from forming is to wipe the boat down every time you come in.

To get them off, mix about 1/3 white vinegar and 2/3 water in a spray bottle. Spray it on, let it sit a bit and wipe it off.

CLR does the job very well. Dilute 50/50 with water, spray and wipe down. Regular wipe downs using Boat Juice or Boat Bling will help too.

Yes when we lived up north in Indiana we wiped the boat with 1/3 white vinegar after every use. It worked well but it also removes wax faster. Hear in the south the water is so soft you could let it air dry. I still wipe it down but no vinegar.

I keep a 2gal pump up sprayer with about 6oz of cheap hair conditioner mixed with water, spray the boat down, wipe off every time the boat comes out of the water. That really helps with the limestone bottom on Lake Travis here in the Lone Star State. At first the kids and wife thought I was nuts. Eighteen years later it’s a ritual that kept our 01 Air looking like it’s been loved. I think I’ll go for a ride.

Thank you once again for all your comments and suggestions. Our dealer just said at the end of the season when I bring it in for winterization they offer some kind of us ceramic treatment that prevents most of our water spots from forming. Have any of you heard of this and is it a viable solution?

Holy cow! Hair conditioner? What the... how did you ever get that idea? Does it leave streaks? Have you ever used Hot Sauce or one of the acid-based products to compare?

Sorry to be so naive but when you say hot sauce you must mean some special detailing stuff called "hot sauce" right? Not real hot sauce

Yes, hair conditioner, cheap stuff like Suave. I’m pretty sure I read about this either here or CCFan.com years ago. As far as streaks, yes sometimes if you don’t wipe the boat dry enough. However, they seem to rinse off easily once you’re back on the water. I forgot to mention that mission one is WAX! Three or so times a summer for me. I also, rarely, use a VERY diluted mixture of CLR sprayed on gel coat (being extra careful to avoid sensitive areas like upholstery), evenly distributed with a sponge, let it sit for 5 min or so then rinse big time. After this treatment I wax.
I tried a commercially produced spot remover at one point but my method seems to work well, for much less. The boat looks great. This year I finally replaced the Air decal on the Starboard side due to sun damage. Heirnaut is a 2001 Air Nautique Direct Drive with 1700 hours.

Once you get the initial spots removed (Viniger, CLR, Buff w/compound). Then you have to maintain every year. I wax mine every year and wipe down after every use. Even at home after washing. No water spots ever. Takes the maintenance to keep them from forming.
