Vinyl Work - Am I Crazy?

Had some vinyl work done recently on the rear decks. Started the process in March so we could have it done by summer. 6 weeks to recover three pieces. Ok fine, we’re still good. Nope. The seamsway off in the middle and the center deck vinyl is loose. Like I can pinch it together loose. No problem, got a vacation coming up, you can fix it then. Their fix was to overstuff the center with foam to take up the space. Now this is what I have and we are now well into boating season. They have been very accommodating to try to make it right, but I honestly just don’t trust their work at this point and don’t want to lose the boat for another month. Any advice?

Looks like you have a Python boat now. Their engine covers sit higher like that to accommodate the spark arrestor on those engines.

If that was my boat, I would not consider that an acceptable repair at all.

Thanks NJ. With all of the work and experience you’ve done restoring boats, I’m glad to know I’m not just being picky.

Any upholstery shop should be able to stretch that skin tight with out any trouble. Its not like that's a difficult piece to cover. Its flat and doesn't have any contours.

I wouldn't be happy with that at all.

Any recommendations on a good shop in the Dallas area? Annoyed that I am going to have to pay someone else to fix this, but I’m really at a loss on what else to do at this point.

That piece will probably have to be remade. Looks like it was made too big to begin with. The vertical to horizontal seams looks like they are installed perfectly as is which means by the time you stretch the the vinyl to take the sag out of the top your seams will be pulled well past the corners where they should be sitting at. I ordered my vinyl from what used to be christines marine which is a site sponsor or advertiser here on PN. The engine hatch cover had to be stretched quite a bit to even get it on let alone stapled down into place where everything lined up. I’d try to have your shop pay for a christines marine (forgot name of new shop but it’s on PN somewhere) cover and then have them install it.

t.franscioni makes a very good point. It does appear that the skin is too large based on the fact that the horizontal seams are right where they should be, yet the center of the skin has too much slack and bulges up (since they put extra padding in the center to fill it out).

Do NOT take it to Waterski America. You would not believe the trainwreck of a vinyl repair they did for me years ago... they did not make right... and the guy who did it is now the service manager. And I suspect they are the ones who tore the vinyl in the first place, sat or stepped on a tool and punctured through.

I still have pictures... and the crazy backstory... but trust me stay away!

They are going to remake it. The two side pieces are perfect, so I know they are capable. I just don’t want to be without the boat for a month while they do the work. :/

Can you get the to do it after the season is done so you don't have to live without a boat in the middle of summer.
