Who has filed a boat insurance claim? Which company? What was your experience?

I see many posts about pricing, but not many about claims. My Foremost policy is almost up and I am shopping around. Sadly, California allows insurance companies to share consumer data (legal form of price fixing IMO), so the policy costs are similar from company to company for the same coverage. Thus, I would like to hear from people who have filed a claim, as that will likely be the differentiator... Please feel free to share good and bad experiences. Thank you in advance.

FWIW, I've filed a couple of claims with AAA related to travel trailers over the past 7 years--always easy and fast service. I had one boat-related claim w/BoatUS, but it was 25 years ago (some stuff stolen from the boat)--it, too, was easy. Nevertheless, I have SkiSafe now mainly based on price/reputation.

I filed a claim years ago with State Farm when a buddy beached my boat and shredded the prop, had to be checked for drive shaft damage. Very easy process but have since switched for a cheaper option.

Nationwide. Hit stump and put small gash in gel coat. Very easy and smooth claim.

I filed a claim with progressive. Lower unit on an I/0. Come to find out they didn’t cover the parts because my boat was too old. So my premiums were not paying for much in the end.

I too have and had Progressive but a much different outcome. Long story short rolled my boat down a hill without the truck and it took a backwards dive over a retaining wall, damaged trailer and rudder and some gelcoat. Completely fixed the rudder and gelcoat and almost completely rebuilt the trailer. Came out better than I began. Working with them was quick and simple. They earned my continued business.

Years ago we had a 19' Boston Whaler Outrage, trailer, engine, gear stolen. Progressive reimbursed us for everything that was stolen, and sales tax, and registration fees. Fast and easy. Still use them today. Rate was cheaper than Ski safe or State Farm.

Claim with Boat US. Great rate with agreed value with a 1% deductible. Hit a rock at speed at night. Pretty scary. Luckily no injuries and luckily the water level was not any lower. Learned some valuable lessons that night.

Damage was extensive and landed around 12K. Very smooth and super easy claim. Had a surveyor out next business day. Boat was running again in 3 weeks thanks to great service by the local fiberglass guy and boat shop.

These pictures will make you cry.

Yeah if strut that had ripped out we would have likely sunk quickly. Deep water (other than the rock), 8 people..far from shore, still makes me sick to think about. I've been boating at night my entire life but that incident put me in check for the better.

Also funny you mention the strut because they were virtually unavailable across the country. I personally called every Nautique dealer across the country until I found someone who had one on their shelf. N3 had it. They're my first call for everything now.
