If you plan to buy a brand new vehicule go see edmunds TCO and you might find that the gas saving between the two vehicles your are looking at is nothing compare to the depreciation lost. Do not assume gas saving is a lot when you compare total cost of ownership of a vehicles.

This is just a thought but I'm guessing not all boat trailers are created equally and some might be balanced better than others. So the same 230 on one trailer might pull great and on another trailer might be a hand full behind the BMW. Ive pulled a lot of trailers and know just a few inches forward or back when towing a jeep or tractor make a difference I just don't have enough experience with different boat trailers to say how much of an issues it is between trailer manufactures but figured it wouldn't hurt to bring it up.

This is a great point. I never buy any boat or car brand new for that very reason. I was looking at the certified used X5 diesel. I actually purchased my sons X5 and paid for the first two years of service. That car has been a champ. Besides basics oils changes and tires the only thing we’ve had to replace was an alternator. Now on the other hand, my wife’s suburban is always in the shop for this or that and the parts that fail are some how never under warranty. But don’t get me wrong, I’ve been pulling wake boats for over 20 years and my go to towing vehicle has been a suburban.

What I cannot understand is that a lot of people think the X5 cannot brake, but my experience is the opposite. The brakes of a German car are so good and bulletproof, I cannot get that off a F150 or 2500 Ram. I never drove something heavier so I'm not sure about the 1/2 types, but I really think an average German SUV will be better equipped than any entry Truck...

Keep in mind that as you near the max tow rating on most tow vehicles you need to start reducing the load in the tow vehicle itself to stay within the max overall gross weight. Often a vehicle hauling a trailer at the max weight allows for a 150b driver and a can of coke in the tow vehicle.

My '08 230 on a Boatmate trailer weighs 6,200# basically empty with approx 1/3 fuel load. The trailer has 18" wheels on it, so this would get you a pretty good estimate on weight. We have towed this setup a little bit (we live on a lake so don't trailer alot) with a lot of different vehicles.
'12 Durango R/T (V8) w/tow package-towed great, no power issues and the brakes were very solid on this vehicle, MPG not great empty, and towing like 10mpg or less.
'08 Tundra TRD 4wd-towed great, not a ton of "head room" climbing hills, but no issues. Drank gas like a sailor on leave
'00 Ford E350 (5.4 gas)-no issues, not great power, but gets the job done. I would say the brakes are not great on this vehicle
'00 Ford F350 Diesel dually-no problems
