Reasons not to buy 2008 230 SAN?

The kids are getting serious about wakeboarding, so looking to upgrade our 2001 Sea Ray 190 runabout to something actually built for wakeboarding. Not loking to dump out $150k on a new boat, and I am generally comfortable with buying a used boat in the sweet spot of price v age of about 10 years old. I was originally looking for something in the 21' size range like a 210, but a guy right in our neighborhood has a nice looking 2008 SAN 230 for sale at what seems to be a pretty good price.

I am not experienced at all with Correct Craft, so looking to learn what things I should be looking out for or worried about in purchasing a used 2008 SAN 230 "Team" edition. It seems to have everything it needs for wakeboarding. Interior carpeting has been replaced with vinyl decking (looks very sharp). Also has a couple of added 1500lb bags that the guy says make it work well also for wakesurf.

The only thing I have heard about the 08 is the tower is a beast to put up and down. I believe 09 went to the newer tower. But maybe you don’t need to put it up and down all of the time.

My friend had a 230, it is a wicked beast. Great surf machine, and great wakeboard boat. Finicky wakeboard wake that washes out easily unless you weight it quite a bit, in which case it won't be too great for the kids...

We do live on the lake and the plan would be to store the boat in a covered boat lift. We would need a new lift and canopy system in any case for the larger boat, so the inconvenience of folding the tower probably dictates a canopy designed to accommodate leaving the tower up. Not a deal breaker, but it does add cost to the overall package. Thanks for the heads up.

Not too worried about the wake being too big - the "kids" in question are teenagers who are fearless about big air. When you say "weight it quite a bit" is the built in center tank enough for that? Or will there need to be messing around with added ballast? The best glassy water is often in the mornings when its just the driver and rider, so convenience of putting the ballast on and off is a consideration.

As long as it is well cared for, these are great boats! If it has the 343 motor they are pretty bulletproof (imo). as far as the wake being finicky, I don't see that on mine. I have extra ballast plumbed into the rear and center tanks and it works well. I propped down so my top speed isn't what it was, but we just surf and wakeboard. I also added an aftermarket NSS style system that works great! I have an 08 230 with over 1000 hours and although appearance wise it's probably a 7, mechanically it is a 9-10.... You should be able to get that boat for a very good price... As far as you r lift, since you have to get a new one anyway, go ahead and get a 10k capable lift... it's marginal the price difference and you will have no problems.. (I.E. forgetting to drain the ballast) and it will already be able to accommodate a larger boat down the road if you upgrade. Just my .02

As said above you will be "messing around" with extra ballast rear, and center...well beyond stock to not be finicky and wash out side to side. IMO the 343 is a little under powered for a 230 when used over stock. And the oem stock prop will not be a great fit. As far as your teenagers being fearless, you can report back when what they think after they try it. Awesome wakeboard boat when weighted down.

Just to put a conclusion on this thread, we ended up buying a 2015 SAN 210 with the NSS.

Congrats, great boat that will treat you well for a long time if you maintain it right.

Coming from an I/O Sea Ray (same boat I had before switching to the dark side many years ago).....make sure you do some research on the maintenance required as its much different. Being in MN, you MUST winterize it correctly so you don't crack the block during your hard winters. You will also have a learning curve driving it compared to an I/O, mostly in reverse since it will only reverse in one direction (toward drivers side), but with a little practice you can make that work for you, just approach the dock at an angle and then bump reverse to suck in the a**end of the boat.

Replace the impeller each Spring and change oil every 50hrs (FYI....PCM put out a service bulletin in July 2019 about changed oil specs), your owners manual will say to use 15w-40 oil....the new engine oil specs call for a Dexos 2, 5w-30 oil like Mobile 1 synthetic, etc. I imagine with teenagers you will be using the boat frequently during the summer. Again, congrats on the sweet boat!
