New GS24 vs used G23.. pros and cons?

    I am looking at a used 2015 G23 and a new 2019 GS24.

The price of the new boat is quite a bit more than the G23, but not so much that I would not buy it. I think I can get the GS for a reasonable discount.

The engine on the G23 is the 450HP and the GS24 is 409. The G23 has 200 hours on it and looks to be perfect and maintained by the dealer.

Has anyone been able to ride behind the GS24 and G23 that can comment on the pros and cons of each boat? Any other comments?

I am leaning towards the GS24 but my son thinks the G23 is the way to go...

My opinion. ThatÂ’s a good question, it really depends on your use case and how much youÂ’d like the peace of mind of a warranty. If mostly wakeboarding and surfing, G23. If you do just cruise around a lot and you want a better ski wake or beginner wakeboard wake, GS probably. And I imagine the GS will depreciate faster. (I have a 2015 G23, never ridden behind a GS)

Please be aware the 2015 G23 has the old hull design which had spray issues. The G23 was modified in 2016 to help eliminate the spray issues.

And the rear of the 2016 G23 was also modified to enhance the surf wave. There is a definite preference in the preowned market for ‘16 and later G23/25s. Be tough for me to chose a ‘15 G23 over and new GS24. If you can swing a new GS24, why not a used ‘17 G23?

There is some really good advice here. You will definitely want to be patient and find a 17+ G23 (the spray issue is significant and the hull improvements for the surf wave). We cruise to town and back for food and fuel...nearly every other time we leave the dock we are filling tanks for surfing. If we did more cruising I would have considered the GS. The G23 is a pig and I love it...

Thanks for al of the great comments!

I have decided to ditch the idea of a pre 16 boat.

Now that I am looking at newer boats I see some that have the stern thruster installed. Is this a big deal?

Are the spray issues resolved in the 16 or 17 G?

My understanding is spray in 16 and Hull/wave in 17.

It’s a “nice to have” feature that I believe will be standard some day on these big boats similar to what Anti Lock Brakes were on cars many years ago.

If you find a used one that has it...I would strongly consider it. Windy days loading on a trailer or boat lift is pretty darn handy. (Always in manual mode...I wouldn’t bother with the auto steer unless [maybe] you are new to inboards)

Let us know what you finally purchase.

16 and 17 are identical hulls on the G23

I had a 15 and couldn't ditch it quick enough primarily because of spray around the bow. It is not an issue if you don't have wind, but I live in the desert, which seems synonymous with breezy weather. Others have not always found it to be a problem, but those are guys who strictly wakeboard, or ride in protected areas from the wind. I did not identify it as a problem when I test drove on a calm day.

I may be in the minority, but going from a 15 to a 16, I am not all that sure the surf wave was any better, but the marketing sure says it is.

2019 GS24 with pro ballast is an incredible boat, awesome surf wake, good wakeboard and ok ski boat! It drives so much better than a G as well, you can’t go wrong with a GS 24, they are a under appreciated boat for sure!

Did your boat come with the pro ballast or was it added?
