Does a new propellor affect fuel economy?

I have a fairly heavily weighted 2001 SAN (check out pictures in this thread http://www.planetnautique.com/index....ewtopic&t=6142), and the original prop has a small chip in it. There is no vibration yet, but it is something I want to get fixed before it becomes a problem. If it can't be fixed, my brother and I are going to buy a new prop. We are thinking now of simply getting the same pitch prop, since it has no problem getting us out of the hole, but I would be willing to reconsider if a different pitched prop not only got us out of hole the same speed, but also saved us gas. If the trade off is a faster hole shot at the cost of higher running speeds through the day and more gas consumption though, we're definitely sticking with the same pitch.

Give Jim or Bill a call at ACME prop and they can fill you in on the benefits and negatives of a different pitched prop. They were very helpful for the prop purchase I made last week. FYI, I had a 644 and went with the 856 for better hole shot and fuel savings during boarding and surfing. I also don't cruise much.

You have probably have a 14/18 Oj if it is the factory prop. I went with the ACME# 644 after some research and talking with Gary at ACME. I have been running the new prop for a couple of weeks now and cant see any more fuel consumption compared to the stock 14/18 that came on my 00 Super. I usually have 4-8 people in the boat and sometimes fill the factory tanks. The 644 pulls very well and I dont have to push the revs past 3200rpm to get out of the hole, any more than that and people complain about going to fast to the set speed.
