OTW, yes the brass valve is a type of check valve. Stick the brass fitting w/ tube into the full gas can and shake or "jiggle" it. It only takes a few strokes to prime and you have a good flo til the tank is empty.

      Build a Gas Bong

      Jonfo,
I had the same problem with my 2006 196. I built a Gas Bong out of pvc fittings. Basically it is a 4" diameter pipe about 30" tall with a cleanout fitting on top and a hose connection on the bottom. Attach a 3/4" diameter hose and a short 1/2" cpvc nipple on the end.

This allows you to remove the filler from your gas cans and just dump the enitre 5 gallon can into the bong. I can drop 5 gallons of gas in my boat in seconds with this and don't spill a drop. If you're interested I can post a picture...

        RE: Build a Gas Bong

tbennett - yes please post a picture. I currently use the siphon hose, picture on page 1 of thread, but I am always looking for something better.

          Build a Gas Bong

Gas Bong: Open can, insert gas.
Here's a few pictures... (taken hastily)
With the smaller filler on new Nautiques this really works well.

Use 4" diameter PVC for standpipe. Cleanout fitting on top. 4"x2" reducer on bottom with 2"x 3/4" diameter busshing; 3/4" ell with hose connection' 3/4" hose; 1/2" pipe nipple.

Mounted with hose clamps to boathouse. Something to consider if you bring in gas.

            TBennet,

How do you stop the flow if full?

What's a full tank of gas?

That's not a problem I've run into. I keep gas at dock. I usually drop in 2 - 4 five galloon cans a week. My boat is never more than 3/4 full at any time.

 I suppose you could put a gate valve at the hose connection.
 Might be possible to attach a handle type filler on the end.

tbennet has a great system for guys who fill up at the same location. For a shut off you could put a pvc ball valve near the hose end.

The hose has esentially a check valve that creates the vaccum, however it's not so fun when it get's stuck in your truck's fill hose and you have to tear that assembly appart to get it out. Ask me how I know. :x
